Amazon.com Review
For a quarter-century, Lockheed's Mach 3 SR-71A Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft dominated the skies as no other. The men that flew the 55-ton "Habu" (so dubbed by Okinawans near one of its bases because of its resemblance to a local deadly black snake) at 80,000 feet and 33 miles per minute were the rarest of fraternities, and author and former 9th Recon Wing commander Richard Graham provides a score of them--as well as key ground personnel--a generous forum for their self-penned recollections here. Where Graham's first book, SR-71 Revealed: The Inside Story, dealt more with the Blackbird's remarkable hardware and history, this volume details the human dimensions of the SR-71 program, from its dangerous days of development and testing through decades of intelligence-gathering operations in the world's hot spots, to its final, bittersweet confrontation with the one foe it couldn't elude: self-serving Pentagon politics. Inspired by flying a plane that often seemed to have a mind of its own--and a sometimes malicious one at that--the anecdotes here are seasoned with a compelling mix of boyish humor, sheer terror, and enviable camaraderie. As Graham's fellow SR-71 pilot and author Brian Shul once noted, more people have stood atop Mt. Everest than have flown what remains the world's fastest, highest-flying jet. (The author is donating all royalties to the J.T. Vida Memorial Fund, set up to preserve Blackbird 972, whose 1990 transcontinental, record-setting retirement flight is recounted herein, currently housed at the Smithsonian Museum) --Jerry McCulley

If you love flying and airplanes, or are current or ex-force and find the SR-71 fascinating, this is a great book!!I was at McConnell AFB in the late '60s when an SR-71 made an emergency landing and I saw it from 200' - I was spellbound! Two crewmen climbed out in high altitude flight suits (X-15 style) and unzipped them, pulled them down, and there stood two business men in suits and ties!James Bond stuff!Fuel poured out from underneath and Security Police were everywhere with M-16s and I was told to turn away. And the subsequent takeoff with blue flame shock diamonds was even more spectacular!! Pure magic!!, the stuff ofscience fiction! It impressed me almost as much as the pilots I met with South East Asia 100 missions completed, the "Century pilots" - I bow to you guys!!!This book describes all of the YF-12/SR-71 aircraft, and crew, characteristics in fine detail. The aircraft, and the book, are testament to the genius of Kelly Johnson and the personnel at the Lockheed "Skunkworks"This book is not the only SR-71 history book, there are at least four really good ones, but this is one of the best!It is a shame the SR-71 program was tanked so soon after it was developed.Hoorah HABU!ðŸ‘🻠Hoorah to the crewsðŸ‘ðŸ»!
Donn Byrnes' discussion of Cat II testing at Edwards AFB brought back memories. I do recall that conversation with Maj. Hurley ( in Spring 1965 ) to "find the cause of the cooling air problem, or move my bed into the hangar until it was found and fixed, he wanted a solution not a shooting". I am impressed that my contribution to the success of the Blackbird has been remembered and praised after so many years. God Bless Ken Hurley and Donn Byrnes.May God Bless all the crews who have had the opportunity to fly and maintain the Blackbird over some 20+ years.Thank you Rich for writing the book.Frank Doyle, the lowest ranking officer in the SR-71 / YF-12 Test Force @ EAFB. ( Feb. 65 - Aug. 67 )
Really fascinating book. Well written with all personal stories. I spent 3 and 1/2 years (Dec 1981 to Apr 1985) living on Kaden AFB on Okinawa. I have many fond memories of watching the Habus taking off and landing. The night time missions are the best. Just to hear the bird take off was unique as no other plane made the same sound. The lavender flames and diamonds brought every hair on my arms to stand straight up. They always flew the same track in the evening sky. It really made me quite proud to think that Kelly Johnson and crew designed and built the planes and the men who flew and maintained them.
Very interesting book, with intimate details about this legendary aircraft. I'm retired Air Force Intel and this bird was the highlight of airbreathing assets of the USAF. Highly recommend this book for anybody with an interest in military flight
Wonderful reading. Was always awe struck with this majestic lady of the sky. Reading about the aircrews just make her more enjoyable
