Then some boys from Little Italy begin to throw rocks that destroy the kites. Henry wants to fight, but Grandfather Chin prefers to resist quietly by continuing to fly kites of increasing glory. Finally, Henry confronts the boys, and learns that they keep pet pigeons--the very birds that Grandfather Chin has chased with his kites. Together, the children work out a deal for air space: kites in the morning; pet pigeons in the afternoon. Hall's messages about compromise and tolerance weigh a bit heavily, but, in Henry's young voice, he tells an engaging story about a vibrant community, which is beautifully captured in Low's detailed, dramatic paintings. This was a book all my classes listened to spellbound! Rare example of striking art, meaningful and relatable storyline, cultural educational value, and satisfying but unexpected conclusion!

Happy to get this book as gifts for family members. It's written about my great grandfather, the kite flyer in the story and illustrated by a classmate of one of my brothers. A wonderful book.

I just read this book to my 4 year old and oh my goodness! What a tremendously beautiful book in every way! The illustrations were gorgeous and the story itself was unbelievably touching. What an incredible lesson in "not everything is as it seems," as well as acceptance, friendship, and respect for all things. I have only ever reviewed one more book but I was so touched by this I had to share my opinion with others. A MUST HAVE!!

If you like mountaineering stories, this one is interesting. Rather than describing just one climb, there are three trips to three different mountains covered in this book. That said, I'm not crazy about Mr. Boardman's writing style. Part of it might be his British colloquialisms, but I find his phrasing to be a bit clumsy at times. I had to re-read a number of sections to understand what he was saying. I would probably not want to wade through another of his books.

Another splendid true adventure account by Peter Boardman. It's unfortunate that he died before his time.

Could not find anything in the book I have not read before!

I enjoyed Sacred Summits, Pete's writing style is excellent! He was able to describe his climbs succinctly, and to add interesting personal events.

Love these expedition journals, incredible climbers!!

Well written, and very descriptive. The author takes you with him on each expedition, and draws you into the fear and triumphs. highly recommend this book.

The author started describing the climb of the Snow Mountains in New Guinea with his girlfriend. While an interesting diversion, I was rather disappointed because I was expecting high mountain climbing which Boardman and Bonington are famous for. Finally, they started to climb Gauri Sankar which was a spectacular climb requiring extensive climbing skills. The use of descriptive language was above average so you can really see and feel like you are on the climb with them. The authors also included much detail of the climb many other authors leave out. You will be pleased with the thrill of climbing and the rich use of the English language.

Like snow & the climb. Prefer lifts for snowboarding tho'...
