Great book if you love people who love themselves to an extreme. Also a great read if you hate the United States, especially southerners. Perfect for the "open-minded, progressive" types who look down their noses at anyone who doesn't behave and think exactly like themselves. Also, a great gift for anyone who likes books that pretend to be about people doing something, but then are really just about quitting doing that thing before they really get started. Here's a good example of the writing, "See, the Army Corps of Engineers aren't really good at building. One time this thing that they built broke. Moving on...I like Great Britain because there aren't that many Americans there. See, I really hate myself, so I take it out on all other Americans instead if just looking in the mirror and admitting that I am a sad sack."

It has been twenty years since Bill Bryson, a writer originally hailed from a small town in Iowa, fell in love with Great Britain where people are delighted in small pleasures, called strangers “Love,” and orderly wait on lines in public without peevishness. So much so that he has even married one. Now it is high time that Bryson returns to the States along the lines of Odyssey, who returned home in Ithaca twenty years after the decade-long Trojan War and another decade of travails. In retrospection of the memories collected on his beloved adopted homeland, Bryson decides to take a valedictory jaunt around the island small but big enough to nurture him with a wealth of culture and a bounty of humanity. And he does it on public transportation and by hiking along with his trademark razor-sharp wits, intractably keen intelligence, and his usual touchy-feely way of observing people and things that either irk or pique him. All of it comes to fruition in this highly amusing and genially forthright travel memoir. You will be surprised to find out that the British think that the cereals are their invention. You will be overawed by the ubiquitous hedgegrows dated back to Anglo-Saxon times embroidering on the British landscape. Bryson will also take us for a ride in a London cab driven by an affably jocular cabbie who has to pass the Knowledge Test to memorize almost everywhere in the City of London. But London is not his demarcation of traveling. Bryson will further come along with you to Bournemouth, Exeter, Liverpool, which is his favorite city, Manchester, and even up north to Scotland all by train or coach, and by walking. With his truculent feistiness, irrepressible inquisitiveness, and scintillating sense of humor fabulously ingrained in his choice of the apropos words and jovial descriptions devoid of malice, Bryson is a cool cicerone, and your excursion will never be a bore. The book seems to be primarily aimed for British readers who might be curious about what a foreigner would think of them and their country as a whole. In that regard, Bryson’s words are predominately British in the sense that the words and expressions he uses in the narrative are familiar to the British. For example, “bank holidays,” “coach,” “lorry,” or “Sainsbury’s” are peculiar to the British ways of life. But this kind of cultural barrier is kindly tackled by Bryson by providing you with glossary of the British terms in the end of the book.I have read other books by Bryson because of the same reason that induced me to select this book: his story-telling like narration is very appealing to me with his proverbial witticism smeared in every word he employs. He may appear a grumpy American man, but he has a heart to feel and see milk of human kindness in every quotidian thing or nondescript person by using the most appropriate words in wonderfully lucid expressions. There is a charm in his writing that will make you an admirer of his writings, and this book is no exception. It is Bryson’s long love letter to the small island he has fallen for head over heels with sincerity and loyalty with kisses and promise to come back to her.

Right. Well this book completely derailed my reading list for the summer. I was supposed to be catching up on Criminal Justice texts and memorizing terms from Barron's Law Dictionary... Instead, I purchased Notes from a Small Island and things went out of control from there. It is literally the first time in my life that reading a book made me laugh out loud and uncontrollably, to TEARS. This gem was highly recommended by English friends as a must-read before I make the move to the UK for my year of study abroad this fall. I obliged. Not even halfway through the book, I decided to order more of his books right away in order to have them ready when I finished with this one. That is how my Bill Bryson binge began. Currently I am on my third book (by order of what arrives in the mail first) called A Short History of Nearly Everything.Bryson is merciless in his observations of British towns and the British in general, but it's all in the spirit of that endearingly cynical, self-deprecating, quintessential British humour. (see what I did there?!) His way of writing puts you at ease and it's like a cross between travel guide, government & history lesson and stand up comedy, as Bryson loves to go off on barely relevant and hilarious tangents. You never get the sense that he is trying too hard or being pretentious, either. A bonus is the glossary he provides in the back of the book for British words like "dual carriageway" and "naff."The fact that it was recommended to me by English and Welsh friends is testament to the authenticity of Bryson's observations and his comedic genius. Seriously recommend this read if you're an Anglophile or just enjoy a good, fun read.

This is the book that made Bill Bryson's latest publication, "The Road to Little Dribbling," possible. After living in the UK for a number of years, Bryson decided to take a fresh look at his adopted country and travels throughout England, Wales, and Scotland before he relocated his family to the U.S. for a period of time -- and the result is "Notes from a Small Island." This year, with the publication of "Little Dribbling," he goes back to the places he saw in "Notes." Both books are worth the read -- and both give you plenty of laugh-out-load moments, as well as many moments of thoughtful reflection on being human, as well as life in the UK. Having read "Little Dribbling" first, I came at "Notes" with a genuine curiosity about what his original insights would be like -- and how his perspective had changed. In addition to gaining an appreciation of these qualities, it was interesting to see how Bill Bryson had grown as a person and author. All in all a rewarding purchase -- and a great antidote to those times when daily life gets a bit too heavy to handle.

As pointed out already, the message is indeed excellent and it got me interested when I first watched the TED talk.. I bought the book waiting for the author to have elaborated more on this interesting idea, with more examples and comprehensive discussion. However, the book is insanely redundant with the same 2-3 examples repeated over and over and over and over again.. The author was trying so hard to make a many-page book out of the message and it was excruciating to go through this repetition..Save your money and (most importantly) your time and just watch the TED talk on YT..

The author's TED talk is one of the most-viewed ever; and it's really quite good. In fact, it's so good that you don't need to read this book! He takes a very, very simple concept and expands, and expands, and repeats, and seemingly never edits, and then repeats, and expands, and -- well, you get the idea. The whole thing could've been done in 50 pages or less.Example: Yes, there's a difference between WHAT one does in business and WHY one does it. And sometimes they diverge. He calls this the "Split" and has a graphic and whole chapter on it. Really?? Not needed.Example: He mines the stories of Apple, Wal-Mart, Costco, Starbucks, Martin Luther King Jr, and a few others - over & over & over & over & over again. He makes elementary and generalized statements, such as saying that NONE of the 250,000 people who came to hear Dr. King in Washington came for him; no sir, they came for themselves because their "why" connected with his "why." Uh, no; many came for him and his message or to simply support civil rights.Example: He constantly repeats the words WHY and WHAT in CAPS ALL THE TIME so you'd get the message. And then again....and again.....Example: Yes, the Apple Computer story is inspiring. But among all that WHY stuff is also the story of a dreamer with incredibly bad people skills. To simply elevate the Apple story - and retell it umpteen times - is to vastly oversimplify what made them great back then and now, and why they succeeded in spite of the way Jobs treated his employees. It's almost as if the author had about 10 stories in his pocket and decided to use nothing else at all. He created the entire "start with WHY" mantra out of the 10 stories and never went beyond them to augment, embellish, or create more learnings. So save the money, see the TED talk, and take what he says there to heart. WHY is the basis for being motivated. But there's a whole lot more to say, and sadly, he never gets to it.

I read a lot. At least a few hours a day. This book was awful.Let's start with why. Sinek is an awfully repetitive and, frankly, unskilled writer. He lays out his thesis and then repeats it like a rower repeats his stroke. As he drags out the book to whatever number of words he needed to fulfill book contract, he re/illustrates his thesis with different examples. This would have made the book slightly more tolerable, except the examples are so ordinary and well known that they will put you to sleep. Apple, Disney, JFK, Hitler. Yawn. Even that might be fine if he had spent five minutes on Wikipedia to research less-known stories about them, but it doesn't look like he did. This book should have been a column in a weekend newspaper, or, at best, a chapter in another book about leadership. Not worth your time.

I've read and studied a lot of material over the last 2 years looking for answers to my life and business. What I didn't realize, is that I was looking for this book. While no book stands alone, this book puts the big picture together for me. Without a why I can find myself drifting from one opportunity to the next, with nothing more than fleeting excitement for a new idea. This book has inspired many thoughts as I read it, but it has helped me to truly put into perspective the age-old advice to follow your passion. It's not enough to follow your passion, you got to know why you're passionate for it. I highly recommend this book to anyone struggling to figure out what they want to do when they grow up. I'm off to read his follow-up book, Find Your Why.

I read this book 10 times. No, I didn't read it over and over. I just read it once and by doing that I read it 10 times. It's so repetitive that I actually stopped multiple times to check where I am in the book, thinking that I mistakenly flipped back to a previous chapter. I started to wonder if the author has amnesia and forgot that he explained why Apple is innovative for the 100th time. I gave it two stars because the underlying concept is a good one but you can save your time and just watch the TED talk.

While the majority of this book is about companies and the people who lead them, it is completely relatable to your personal life outside of work. Years ago, I worked for a company led by a man who clearly started with WHY. The company was bought out quite a few years ago, but my former colleagues and I still talk about the founder and the company with love and devotion. We describe it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that those who never experienced it couldn't possibly understand. My current company, which bought that former company, is much bigger so it's tough to compare, but I definitely believe that the leadership understands WHY as well.I think everyone should read this book. Understand your company's WHY, your spouse's WHY, your children's WHY...and don't forget your own WHY.#Farrakhan @simonsinek

How do you rate this book? The basic idea is good, the book itself is a slog. As others have noted, watch the Ted talk, or read a summary from an abstract service. The premise is interesting, but it's not ground breaking. Basically, it's: don't start with what you can do and figure out how to find a market, but instead start with a passion, a need, and what gets you up in the morning, build a business around that, and hire people who share your passion. It's slightly more than that, but not much more, hence find the Ted talk or read an abstract.

The Girls' Guide To AD/HD: Don't Lose This Book!, by Beth Walker

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up - Walker covers a wide spectrum of topics to provide both technical and practical facts about AD/HD. Although the information is comprehensive, it may be too overwhelming for girls who have difficulty attacking larger tasks (like reading such a dense book). The writing style varies, but generally Walker tries to be conversational and teen-friendly. The text is written from the viewpoint of Maddy, a fictional character with AD/HD. Sprinkled throughout are "conversations" among her and two of her friends, also girls with AD/HD. Sometimes these discussions work, sometimes they don't (the voice tries hard to be cool, but may end up sounding flip). Despite the chatty tone, much of the narrative seems to target an adult audience and would make a good resource for parents, teachers, and other school staff. There are many good things about this book, but its cluttered layout makes it challenging for its intended audience. - Mary Hazelton, Warren Community School and Miller Elementary School, ME Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. I got this book for my daughter and it was a great investment. I actually had to buy another one because she did lose it! Anyway, it helped her understand her own brain and see her strengths and weaknesses. It gave her a confidence and control no one else could. I highly recommend this book for girls.

This book is simply amazing. I was first diagnosed when I was five, and didn't really know what AD/HD was other than it meant I was hyper sometimes and couldn't always focus. When I got re-tested at 16, my tester recommended I become more informed about AD/HD, so I bought a few books, and honestly, this is the only one that I ever finished (heck this is the only one that I even read of full chapter of). This book made me realize just how many of my annoying habits weren't my fault and helped improve my self-confidence IMMENSELY. I even lent it to a 12 year old boy after he got diagnosed and he loved it too. I am now a freshman in college and still find myself explaining the science of AD/HD in the same terms this book did. Unfortunately, I lost my copy (ironic, I know)but I am planning on buying a new copy very soon.

I bought this for my 11 daughter who looses everything! She reads a lot but keeping her focus on a self help type of book was difficult mostly because of her age. After she read it she referred to things she learned about herself in the book quite often. It hasn't changed our or her lives overnight however I feel like she gained a lot of insightful information and hope that as she continues to grow she will glean more age and situational information tools to help her function more effectively.

Excellent book for my newly diagnosed teen girl. This book directly TO her instead of talking ABOUT her as if she were some test subject to be observed. After she got it she came to me with revelations as to why she had been having difficulties even while on medication as the book helped her to understand that when your cycle comes, emotions may be off, sleep may be off or you may just be OFF. She could see herself in each of the persons mentioned in the book and keeps it as a memorur of sorts..she says its her life story but she didn't have to type it.( I'll take that as long as it helps.)

Great guide for any teenager (or adult) with ADD. Very user friendly, great tips, and an easy read. Good condition, quick ship, good price, thank you.

I bought this for my newly-diagnosed 9-year-old and have decided to keep it until she is a little older. Looks well written and presented in an interesting format. But it addresses issues that a little bit older girl needs to read about, not a 9-year-old.

My daughter loved this book!

Great book to share with my daughter!
