Matt Rogers combines real life situations in this pulp fiction novel. He puts it all out there drawing the reader into a world we would rather avoid. But, we find ourselves immersed and maybe relating to each experience. This is a page turner that gets your heart beating, breaking and warming with every situation. This is a great read that / left me wanting more.

THIS BOOK WAS ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING BOOKS IN THIS GENRE THAT I HAVE EVER READ. MATT ROGERS JASON KING SERIES IS REALLY GOOD BUT THIS SERIES IS EVEN BETTER. WILL SLATER IS A SECONDARY CHARACTER IN THE KING SERIES BUT HE MORE THAN HOLDS HIS OWN AS A COMPELLING MAIN CHARACTER IN HIS OWN SERIES.

Keeps your interest all the way tnrough the book. Each part is connected with the story and keeps you wanting more information. All the way to the end. The words are a bit rough at times, but I guess are more normal than I'm used to in this current day. I enjoyed it throughly!

Matt Rogers has created another thrill packed book with Will Slater. Every book is exciting to read and hard to put down. A must read for anyone who loves the good guys. I highly recommend this book and all the books that Matt has written.

As always, non stop action with Will Slater. Page burner and like running down hill...hard to stop. One chapter leads to another and you have to keep going running faster down the hill, until you get to the end. Then, you have to start looking for another Will Slater adventure.

This truly is one of the best of Matt Rogers books. Will Slater is one badass guy, and yet there is an underlying soft spot that seems to come out to help those in need. I highly recommend this book, buy it and enjoy the twists and turns.

To me , now that Jason King is gone. Will Slater is the best Matt arites. I have read all of them to the latest Bull all are 5. I e joy Will, a d the action.

I would highly recommend this book. It Is non stop action. I love the character and story line of this book.

Review

"Chess has been shaken to its roots by AlphaZero" (Garry Kasparov, Former World Chess Champion)""Most unnerving was that AlphaZero seemed to express insight. It played like no computer ever has, intuitively and beautifully, with a romantic, attacking style." (Steven Strogatz, Professor of mathematics at Corner New York Times)"Quite inspirational. I was thinking at several points during the game [in Round 11 of the 2019 Tata Steel Chess Tournament]: how would AlphaZero have approached this?" (Magnus Carlsen, World Chess Champion)"I love Game Changer. This is a phenomenal book." (John Bartholomew, International Master YouTube Channel)"One of the most important chess books ever written." (Raymond Keene, Grandmaster The Spectator)

#8,081 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I have read the first half of the book and am enjoying it very much. Â The deep explanation of the many ways that AZ differs from humans and other engines offers many insights into how a god-like entity would play the game. Â AZ makes moves that defy conventional thinking and beats Stockfish 8 with them. Â Sadler and Regan explain the 'thinking' behind these moves clearly and there are usually enough diagrams to follow without setting up a board. Â A minor criticism is that their explanation of neural networks and how NNs learn and calculate falls short of other works on that topic written by professional science writers but the book is top notch when it comes to chess.

So those of us who care were already told that AlphaZero taught itself to play Chess by playing lots of games against itself. And this book tells us the same thing OVER and OVER again. What AlphaZero looked for while it was playing all those games, what information it saved and how it used that information to make its timely move choices is entirely missing. (Saying that the program likes open files, open diagonals, and well posted knights is virtually meaningless. We all like those things, but at what cost?)This book is much more like any game collection that features a single chessmaster except that AlphaZero's opponent is (nearly?) always Stockfish. Some (many?) of the games have already been published and analyzed. The analysis in Game Changer is interesting and presented with clear diagrams. It's a chess book. But if you want real information about AI and neural networks I think you need to look elsewhere.

This is an extraordinary work that should be of great interest to all avid chess players. Many of the Alphazero-Stockfish games shown are from forced opening move sequences to explore how these AI/software programs would play them. Much of what the AI program shows about chess is truly fascinating.... interestingly much of current chess theory is confirmed by Alphazero, just that Alphazero plays it at a much higher more sophisticated level. Also included are well known games played by some of the greats of the past that remind the authors of various of the AI game strategies.

A very creditable analysis, seeking to extract practical knowledge for chess played by humans, from chess games played between AlphaZero and Stockfish (repetitive, though: too large fragments of text are copied in different places, with the excuse of analyzing different aspects of Alphazero)

A fascinating read.

1) I am very impressed with this book! This review is not only about the book it is also about Leela (free AI chess program) and chess analysis at professional level. 2) My background: Chess is my hobby.. I am a strong non professional chess player (FM, Correspondence chess GM), I live in US and I am the highest rated correspondence chess player in US) I also have a library of 2500+ chess books.. My 14 year son is 2300 USCF rated (played on second board in the last round of a couple of World Youth Championships, but no medals :-(, and he won a couple times US National championships.3) leela: I am also very familiar with the free AI chess program Leela. (similar to Alpha Zero) I actually helped GM Caruana's team set it up approximately 1 month before the WC match with Carlsen. They were also very impressed.4) The book is amazing for strong chess players, researchers and correspondence chess players. (not for beginners, probably 2000- or even 2200+ would benefit most.5) Alpha Zero: creativity: It just takes one away from classical chess (Like kasparov's games,an occasional piece of art never see before) . it is like a new form of art opening a new door, a new perspective. new plans, new moves are generated. A different window...(from creative point of view)6) The authors did an amazing job with this very unusual assignment. They describe founder Demis Hassabis (who was a very strong young player, second seed after Judith Polgar in under 14 World Youth Championship in the past), interview with the technical experts in programming, and find examples of unusual plans that stockfish or komodo or Houdini is not able to see. it is the fist book of a new era.7) The book is a lot of fun to read (i already superficially read half of it in a day! fascinating!) it shows positions which are evaluated as 0.00 by chess programs.8) It is probably more interesting for players rated above 2000, though the higher the rating, the more original it will be found..9) techical: (This is not related to book, read only if you are interested in leela and AlphaZero) Alpha Zero is not commercially available, and is in my opinion stronger than leela (probably not for too long), but these programs are a must for chess professionals right now (actually i am building one for a very strong young GM- potential future world champion, as a gift right now) Setting it up was a headache in the beginning (now i have 3 setups with RTX 2080 cards one being dual videocard, with 36 processors running at 3.3Ghz) You need a special videocard (RTX 2060,2070,2080 or 2080 Ti) increasing in price and speed (most cost effective is RTX 2070 , around 500$ for chess)10) basically it generates ideas that are not seen by stockfish and similar alpha zero engines. so gives a completely new way of looking at positions that are evaluated as 0.00 by older chess engines. The future is combination of alphazero engines and neural network engines in one program, that would be even stronger than each one of them. These engines have their own problems (tactics mainly, may miss moves stockfish etc finds) but for positional compensation, long term attacks with material investment these programs are amazing...(leela has very bad endings now, which alpha zero was able to solve) but for middle game, they are amazing. Also very powerful is the opening database *which is very useful for professional chess players because the opening moves these programs generate are different then the ones that hiarcs or other engines opening books, with percentages very close to human success. (in a way thinks like human more, with similar success and similar preferences in the openings)Any serious professional chess player who has not started using these (mainly leela as Alpha zero is not available) is falling behind. A combination of both Alpha zero engines and neural network engines for high level professional chess analysis is a must at this moment.11) Ethical aspects of AI: (This is also an ethical dilemma not about the book, skip if you are only interested in the book) : I would recommend everyone read Harrari's book "21 lessons for the 21st century) dangers of AI... Can it be reversed , no ,it is coming and not preventable. is AI dangerous? in my opinion, depends on how it is used. I see it as a threat to humanity, but mainly because of how its used by us humans. Human race is dangerous ( you may also want to read "Saphiens" by Harrari). AI is not dangerous. How we use it will advance us or will destroy us (I am pessimistic seeing our leaders)A new door has opened, this is the first fascinating book, more will be coming.SUMMARY:1) An amazing book! A new art, a new perspective a new form of creativity is shown... Very nicely written. beautiful ideas by the new AI programs is shown (reminds me of Kasparov's games)2) More for stronger players (2000+, especially 2200+)3) A must for professional chess players and correspondence chess players.4) i really enjoyed reading it.. a treat.....Tansel Turgut, FM, ICCF GM

It took the computer prorgram AlphaZero, developed by the artificial intelligence company DeepMind, less than 24 hours of self-teaching to reach such a level of chess that it astounded the world. The authors, Matthew Sadler and Natasha Regan, looked deeply into the games played by AlphaZero as well as having access to the researchers at DeepMind to produce a remarkable book. The book is arranged in such a way that chapters can be read in any order, and the chess analysis is not overwhelming, with an emphasis placed more on explanations rather than variations. The chapters include topics like: How AlphaZero thinks, Themes in AlphaZero's play, Piece mobility: outposts, Piece mobility: activity, Attacking the king: the march of the rook's pawn, Attacking the king: colour complexes, and Attacking the king: sacrifices for time, space and damage. It is great learning tool for chess players because we can learn from an artificial intelligence that is completely independent from the history of human chess development. The authors guide us through the important ideas in AlphaZero's game and how they compare with those played by humans through detailed explanations, and also show us how AlphaZero's ideas can be used in our own games. It is also of great interest for artificial intelligence developers as it opens up the possibility of using these AI techniques in other fields.

Great book about the Sioux---if you like this book you will also want to read the following 99-cent similar books on the Sioux:1 The Dakotas or Sioux in Minnesota as They Were in 1834 (1908)2 Among the Sioux of Dakota (1881)3 The Arikara Narrative of the Campaign Against the Hostile Dakotas June, 18764 The Brothers Pond: The First Resident Missionaries Among the Dakotahs (1892)5 Dahkotah Land and Dahkotah Life: With the History of the Fur Traders (1859)6 Four Weeks Among Some of the Sioux Tribes of Dakota and Nebraska (1882)7 The Conquest of the Sioux (1900)8 Sketches of Frontier and Indian Life on the Upper Missouri & Great Plains ... during a continuous residence in the Dakotas between 1863 and 1889 (1897)9 Soldiering in Dakota, Among the Indians: In 1863-4-5 (1888)10 On the Border with CROOK (1891)

This is one the best books I have read about he plains Indians.Following Luther Standing Bear, thru his childhood on the plains andexplaining how Teepees are made, how they would skin buffalo and useevery part. All the traditions and customs they had. How they took care of theirown; especially the elderly, who were highly respected and treated with careand dignity. Then we follow Standing Bear, to the modern, white man's world, wherehe realizes for his tribe to survive and himself as well, goes to enroll in the first Indian School...Carlisle School for Indian children, established in 1879. Luther was the FIRST to complete his education here. This is a very well written, first person account of life on the plains and into to the 19th century.Could not put this book down.

I loved the insight into Sioux life, customs and culture. Especially the difference between before and after experience with the white people. I soon became aware of the complete difference between the perceptions of our history, and our teaching after this book. This would be a great source for answering some questions about what were the root cause of the hard feelings and bitterness on both sides.

I have no blood ties to native Americans but greatly feel the tug of the ties of humanity toward them. Their plight makes me so sad. This book increased my feelings. Luther writes in an easy to read way and also in a way that makes you feel close to him even though this book is nearly 100 years old. And even at that, the book doesn’t feel so old—could have been written recently as the struggles continue to be so similar. He writes of his life growing up and then into his adulthood and I couldn’t put it down—took me a couple days to read. His desperation to please his father was heartwarming and inspiring, and it translated beyond when he went to the Carlisle school and further. He wanted so much to be brave and do what was best for his people and himself. So much could be said here!I wish so much that the way America came to be what it is would have been done differently. And it could have been. Though I don’t have the answers, I am grateful to have read this book and been given a better glimpse into the life of the Oglala Sioux, and more specifically, Luther Standing Bear.

This man lived a life that was so vivid and different than can be imagined. To go from living in his tribe to a successful man adapting to so much changes in his life is incomprehensible for anyone to understand. After reading this book, you WILL get a true respect for what the AMERICAN INDIANS were put through and their wholesome way of life as meant to be by our creator.

I have read no better book about Native Americans than this one. It is a great story for white people, and all other non-Indians, and a call to respect these "first Americans". It is also a call for all Native Americans to take their place as full citizens and members of this nation-and never accept anything less than what has been promised in treaties to them. We non-natives must stand with them to insure that they are not allowed to languish in broken promises and poverty.

“My People the Sioux”, by Luther Standing Bear This modest autobiography deserves applause on several counts. It is the self-told reminiscences of a Sioux tribesman whose life bridged the worlds of both the “wild Sioux” of the Plains and the “civilized Sioux” of the early 20th century. The author is quite gentlemanly and writes in such a warm style that the reader will soon think he’s reading a letter from an old friend. Of course he polishes the Indians’ apple a bit but that’s okay and nothing a couple grains of salt won’t ease. The only statement he makes that is laughably off-base is that Sioux women don’t gossip when they work together. There is a lot of information about the “everyday” side of Sioux life and relations that is very interesting. The reader will also see that the Sioux weren’t simply howling, bloodthirsty ghouls who happened to be the best light cavalry in the world. Fact is, they were often active negotiators and cooperators exhibiting an admirable patience, concern and self-control, and often in situations that people of other races might well have “lost their cool”. Very good reading.

This book is unlike any other I have read. . Luther Standing Bear gives a true picture of the life of his people. One can discover the actual facts of the life of an influential man and the way of life of the Indians; not the untrue way they were depicted in movies and other books. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the real life of a Sioux. Well done!

Existence (Master Work)

Review

This book does not mirror current fashions in American psychiatry and psychology but does something far more important: it forecasts a future trend... (Gordon W. Allport, Harvard University)Easily the best introduction available for Americans who have been baffled by the European phenomenologists and existentialists. A strong antidote against triviality and superficiality in psychology. (Abraham Maslow, Brandeis University)Existence is now, simply, the major work on existential analysis in the English language. (Journal Of Individual Psychology)This book opens up a new dimension for psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. It is the dimension of the ultimate question, the question of man's nature and his place within the whole or reality. (Paul Tillich, Harvard University)

Here is a book that puts all of the pieces of Existentialism, Existential Psychology and Existential Psychotherapy into place. It is a series of in-depth seminal articles will an introduction "to die for," all written by the giants of the era in which modern psychology was developed. In order to fit within the Amazon guidelines for length, this review focuses primarily on the introduction, which is itself a kind of broad summary of the contents of the book. However, readers are not to be discouraged from delving into the actual test cases upon which the theories and practices are built. In a real sense, they are the foundation of a new discipline. The reader should be warned that this is a densely packed and densely written book and an amateur such as myself, could not possibly do justice to reviewing this book, but here goes anyway. The problem facing psychotherapy during the formative years of psychology was this: Although the techniques of psychotherapy were affecting cures; the therapists did not quite understand why their techniques and theories worked? As a result, the gaps between their theories and the reality of man had begun to raise serious questions - the most important of them being: Were these theories seeing man in the totality of his world of existence? Or were the patient's "unconscious problems" just becoming the "conscious projection" of the analyst's theories and techniques? As a general strategy, the Existentialists believed that treating "mentally ill man" before first developing a science of man was to proceed bass-ackwards: They argued that this approach begged the question: Would it not make more sense to first understand the patient's life-history as a modification of the total structure of his "being-in-the-world," before applying theories to his illnesses?Although Kierkegaard and Nietzsche had struggled with this and similar questions a half-century before, it was Freud's disciples who first seemed to understand the full implications of this growing gap and began trying to cover the blind spots created by it. Arguably the search for ways to fill this gap was the underlying cause of the breakup of Freud's famous Vienna Circle. It was in part the pursuit of this inchoate goal that Carl Jung was the first to stray from the herd. He expanded the Freudian paradigm to include symbols and images. Jung was followed by Otto Rank, who introduced and discussed the notion of "present time" to deal with the patience's inner experiences. Wilhelm Reich, used character analysis as an answer to many of "Freud's "ego defense mechanisms" and instinct theories. Horney then expanded Freudian analysis into new cultural approaches --- as did Fromm and Sullivan who added the missing significance of the social and interpersonal and its impact on neurotic and psychotic disturbances. Adler, May and Rogers, sought to understand the role of self-esteem both as being at the center of the life of man, as well as an independent variable in the therapeutic setting. Thus, Freud's army of acolytes, as an unintended consequence of trying to fill in the blind spots between theory and clinical reality, became in effect the first group of Existentialist psychologists. In the broadest sense then, Existentialism developed as a primarily European movement that protested against seeing the patient in fragmented forms, especially forms tailored to the analyst's own preconceptions. Thus Existentialism became the movement designed to fill in the gap between science and humanism, between existing psychological theory and reality. It sought to do so by broadening the knowledge of man to include the historical perspective: accepting as a "given" that human beings reveal themselves, not just through their illnesses, but also through all forms of "normal" human behavior such as their art, literature, philosophy and cultural movements -- all of which reflect human anxiety and conflicts as well.Existentialism thus is not a philosophy or way of life, but an endeavor designed to get a better grasp on reality. Its paradigm of human behavior is not one based wholly on techniques, but also on a framework that sees man as always becoming, always emerging, and thus always potentially in crisis. The most debilitating form of "methodolatry" came into common use around the turn of the Century through the act of dividing man into "subject" and "object." This, in part was due to Hegel's reining "totalitarianism of reason," in which "abstract truth" was seen as being all there was to reality. However, Kierkegaard and Nietzsche struggling heroically against Hegel, believed that truth exists only as it is expressed through action by individuals: Man is not just a subject to be controlled and manipulated. The Existentialists thus sought to repeal Decartes edict of "cogito ergo sum." For, indeed, man's reality is more than just his thinking. Thought is only one aspect of the vitality of our existence: Man should not think as a thinker; but as a man; not as a collection of static substances, drives, dynamisms, or mechanisms, but rather, always as an emerging and a becoming being. The essence of existence, of reality, of truth, is not thought, but change: of forever becoming, forever emerging.Existentialism's job is to understand that "this becoming" is not just as an artifact of reality but is THE fundamental structure of human existence. Its concern thus is with ontology, the study of being rather than with the study of psychology per se.Every sentence of this book is profound and enlightening. 1000 stars.

While American psychoanalysis during the 40s and 50s was under the influence of Freud, Europeans were beginnig to branch out in new directions, especially influenced by the existentialism of Martin Heidegger, Edmund Husserl, Jean-Paul Sartre and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. "Existence," edited by Rollo May, was the first book to introduce Americans to the writings of those who worked under the mantle of existential psychology. Contained within are essays by Erwin Straus and Ludwig Binswanger, among others. The second half of the book contains three essays by Binswanger not previously available in America.Although the book is a good introduction to existential psychoanalysis, it contians a glaring omission by the absence of writings from Medard Boss, a Swiss Dasienanalysist who became the leading light of this type of therapy in Europe. Despite this omission, however, the book remains an eye-opener for anyone unfamiliar with existential psychoanalysis and is recommended for psychology student and philosophy student alike.

Absolute must-read for anyone working in the various fields of mental health. What has been lost in the industrialization of healing professions, and particularly through the medicalization of the soul, can be recaptured in this book.

Satisfied.

An excellent book! And the ship speed is rather quick.

Existence was the earliest introduction to the US of existencialism and existential psychology and we owe much of the development and growth of humanistic and existential psychology to Rollo May. The book is well written, and is of great historical and philosoical importance. This book is often mentioned as influential upon the work of Carl Rogers, Irving Yalom and others.

This book changed my life, back in my college days. The introductory essay by Rollo May is a revelation, accessible and profound at the same time. The rest of the book is unimportant. Of all the books I read in college and since, this one - that essay - has stayed with me. I highly recommend it.

For those primarily interested in Rollo May's Introduction to this book, I believe it can also be found in his book "The Discovery of Being" Chapter 3 "Origins and Significance of Existential Psychology."The Discovery of Being: Writings in Existential Psychology
