Engineer Ari and the Passover Rush, by Deborah Bodin Cohen

Review

"This fourth entry in the Engineer Ari series finds Ari rushing to complete his steam-engine run - round trip from Jaffa to Jerusalem - before Passover begins. He leaves for the train station with his holiday shopping list, and throughout the day, neighbors and friends present him with holiday gifts: an egg from Miriam, dates and almonds from Moshe, parsley from Shifra, and horseradish from Aaron. In return, Ari purchases special Passover matzah for everyone. He arrives home just in time for the seder, only to fall asleep before the festive meal is served. Set in 1893, Cohen's story provides readers with a glimpse of daily life for Palestinian Jews in the years before the British Mandate. Israeli illustrator Kober's cheerful, cartoon-style artwork reflects the sights and sounds of this bygone era. Appended with a note about the real Jerusalem-to- Jaffa train, this makes a good addition to the holiday shelf, especially for Israeli history buffs." -- Booklist Online--Website"In this fourth title featuring Engineer Ari, the friendly driver of Jerusalem's first steam engine is making one last round trip between Jaffa and the holy city before the start of Passover. Checking the list of items he needs for his seder plate, Ari heads to the station, stopping to talk to his neighbors who offer him a roasted egg and some charoset in exchange for a box of matzah from Jerusalem. Boarding the bright red train, Ari and his passengers travel through the Israeli countryside, stopping briefly so Ari can accept some parsley and horseradish from friends along the way. Crossing two more items off his list, Ari pulls the train into the station and hurries to the Old City to get a shank bone from the butcher and matzah for himself and his friends. Inside the matzah factory everyone is rushing about, making sure to finish each batch of matzah in 18 minutes. 'Any longer and the matzah might rise like bread, ' says Batya the Baker. On his way back to Jaffa, Ari delivers boxes of matzah to his friends, then dashes home with his packages just in time to arrange the seder plate before the festivities begin. The appeal of the Engineer Ari series continues to be its consistent and charming simplicity, which fo-cuses not only on a well known Jewish holiday tradition (e.g. the seder plate), but on a sense of both history and community as well. An appealing addition to the holiday bookshelf." -- Jewish Book World--Magazine"On his last run to Jerusalem before the Passover holiday, Engineer Ari manages to gather all the necessary items for his Seder plate, arriving home exhausted just before the holiday's ceremonial dinner begins. Ari is in a hurry, rushing to keep his train on schedule while trying to gather everything on his Seder shopping list. Luckily, his many friends along the way are more than willing to help. Neighbor Miriam will roast a fresh egg and leave it on his doorstep; Moshe, picking dates and almonds from his orchard, will make him some extra charoset; friend Shifra gives him a bunch of parsley from her abundant basket; Aaron shares his horseradish root by breaking it in half. Once the train arrives in the Old City, Ari quickly finishes his shopping with a shankbone from the butcher, as well as enough matzo from the factory to bring back as a thank-you to all his neighbors and friends. The action plays out on the now-familiar, earnest Israeli's short train ride from Jaffa to Jerusalem in the late 19th century, while neatly folding in the key components of the annual weeklong spring celebration. Nostalgia, companionship and cooperation are emphasized in the simple text and winsome retro-style illustrations. Children and adults will be charmed by the latest in this amiable series." -- Kirkus Reviews--Journal

This series is a favorite with our little guy. He looks fwd to each book emerging from storage as the relevant holiday approaches. The premise of these is just genius. No better way to communicate with a toddler about Jewish holidays than thru the medium of a red steam engine!

my 3 yr old grandson enjoyed this book and had me read it many times over!

Great for children.

Engineer Ari is rushing around trying to get what he needs for a Passover meal for he and his friends. He has a list of what he needs. On his journey his runs into friends that offer him each an item for the Passover meal. Some items he will need to get on his return trip and some he goes ahead and takes. With each friend that gives him something he says he will get them a box of matzah in Jerusalem and bring it to them on his way back. While he is running errands in Jerusalem he learns about how the matzah is made and how long it will take the people to make it. He's in a hurry though so he doesn't spend too much time there and leaves with the matzah soon after. When he returns home after all the rushing and it's time to eat the Passover meal, children may find what happens to be funny.I liked how Engineer Ari offered to help all of his friends with Passover also, by bringing them back some matzah. His friends' kindness made his list of Passover items he needed shorter and it also showed his thoughtfulness towards his friends to make time to stop to drop the matzah off to them later. The items that his friends give him and the matzah that Ari gives them helps to educate children about what the items to be used during Passover are.I think the short glossary of Hebrew words and phrases at the beginning of the book will be helpful to children that speak primarily English, and it will also be helpful to children that already speak some Hebrew to pick up some new words and phrases. There is also a short explanation about the history of trains at the back of the book that some children might find interesting.I received this book free in exchange for an honest review.

#35,108 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

As others have noted, this book is marketed as a thriller/suspense but is far from it. Nothing ever happens except the monotony of day to day of a couple's boring married life or boring, anxiety ridden/paranoid life of Liza. No character development at all. I didn't care what happened to any of these people. This is my first, and likely last, book by this author. I literally skimmed through the last 55% of the book and could not wait for it to be finished. Terrible, boring read and waste of time.

I preordered Forget You Know Me. I had read her two previous books and enjoyed both. I felt that Not That I Could Tell was even better than her first and felt sure that Forget You Know Me would build on the storybuilding skills that were growing stronger with each book. Sadly, as intrigued as I was with the beginning of Forget You Know Me, I wasn't as engaged with the rest of the story. It isn't any lack of writing skill on Ms. Strawser's part. Her fluid writing and ability to make me 'see' the scene are just as good with this book. I think the problem was I didn't like either Molly or Daniel. Since Molly's story is the centerpiece of the story, I was left to read only to find out the answers to what was really going on.I do want to add that Ms. Strawser has the ability to peel away the facades of her characters to find the good and bad underneath. And she also is adept at showing how little lies can have disastrous results. These two aspects of her storytelling remind me of Liane Moriarty. And even though this cast of characters was not my cup of tea, I will definitely read Ms. Strawser's next novel.

4.75 StarsI would like to thank Netgalley and the publisher St. Martin's Press.Molly and Liza have been friends for most of their lives. They grew up together in Cincinnati but after Liza moves to Chicago and Molly gets married they begin to slowly drift apart. Trying desperately to reconnect the two woman plan a Skype date. Molly's husband is out of town so this is a perfect idea, until things start to go terrible wrong. For one thing the women struggle to find anything to really bond about. Liza finds Molly to be cold and distant. She doesn't seem to want to connect. As Molly gets up to tend to her daughter Nori Liza finds herself trying to figure out why she is even trying to salvage this relationship she sees something frightening pop up on screen. A masked man in black appears in the frame. As Liza tries calling Molly and screams her name the man walks calmly to the computer and closes the screen. Freaked out Liza calls 911 but still not feeling okay she decides to drive to Cincinnati. She knows that she will not rest until she sees Molly for herself. Molly is fine but her response to Liza however is not very nice. and in fact she is angry and sends Liza away!Things don't get any better for Liza because after arriving home she finds that her apartment building had a fire and she is the only survivor. Dealing with survivor's guilt and anxiety Liza moves back to Cincinnati. Living with her brother and sister in law she finds herself becoming obsessed with death. While LIza is working through everything that has happened, including the end of her friendship Molly finds her life falling apart. In constant pain and desperate to find something to help she has gotten herself into trouble financially, emotionally and her marriage seems to be slipping away.Told through the POV of Molly, Liza and Molly's husband Daniel this novel tells the story of desperation, anxiety and grief over the loss of relationships. I think that many people will come into this book thinking it is a thriller but it is more of a character study. Some of these topics hit home. I lost a lot of items in a house fire so I totally understood the feeling of anxiety and loss.I would recommend this novel to just about everyone.

Forget You Know Me is the tale of two longtime friends, what drove them apart and what brings them together.Molly is a mother and a wife. She's also someone who has been dealing with chronic pain for a long time. This has affected her relationship with her husband and her son. She's a good friend to her neighbor and his child but has grown apart from her husband. She can't remember when was the last time they enjoyed a nice day together. She has also has grown apart from her best friend Liza.Liza used to live in Cincinnati and be there for Molly but when she moved to Chicago, everything changed. Liza found a new best friend but she doesn't want to end her friendship with Molly, so she plans a Skype call with her, their version of a virtual lady's night. When Molly is called by her son and leaves the room, Liza is a witness to a nightmare. A masked man is in the house with Molly and her son. Liza calls the police, tries to contact Molly but when her answer is a simple text, she can't sleep and decides to drive back to Cincinnati to find out if Molly is ok. The reception she receives when she arrives at Molly's house is not what she was expecting.Due to unexpected events, Liza finds herself leaving Chicago and moves in with her brother and his wife. They are dealing with their own problems and Liza wants to help them any way she can. She starts a new job in Cincinnati where she meets Henry, a pilot whom she starts a relationship with. Lastly, now that she is back in the city, she can patch her friendship with Molly if it is still salvageable.Forget You Know Me is a woman's fiction novel. It deals with friendship, the relationship between mother and child, chronic pain and marriage. I enjoyed it but I didn't love it as much as I have her other two novels. I liked both female characters. Herny was lovable but Daniel was tougher to like.3.5/5 Fangs
