I don't know how successful we were at re-creating the sounds ourselves as we read this out loud to our kids (we could hear them in our heads, but it's hard to mimic a machine's sounds), but it seemed to help a lot, just the same. I highly suggest taking this on the plane with you if you have a small child going on a plane for the first time (or for the first time in a long time), because they can follow along in the book as the sounds actually successively happen! This helped alleviate fears for my kids on their first plan trip, especially the sounds that come from the plane getting ready to go - both are very sensitive to sound. A very simple book, easy to read, colorful, large pictures. Highly recommend.
My son is 5 with "high functioning" autism. We live in the USA and every year we visit my parents in South America. It's always rough because we take 2 seven-hour flights with a layover in the middle and lines everywhere. It's tiring for everyone. That's why I bought this book, so he would know what to expect, sort of like a "social story". The book has 2/3 sentences per page that rhyme and are easy to understand. It shows cool features on airplanes like the air and light on top. The pictures are realistic and detailed and show a flight attendant cart, the seat buckle, etc. And it has grandma waiting at the airport when it's over, which is exactly what we do. Fun, cute and useful. I highly recommend this book!
I bought this book for a recent plane trip... unfortunately my 23-month old son didn't seem to enjoy it much. I think it's a bit too sophisicated for him. The illustrations are rather dark and low-contrast. The book is on the large side and although I was trying to be careful as we were reading it, my son managed to rip a page almost all the way out. I wish I had chosen a different airplane book geared for younger kids.
Bought so son and daughter in law could prepare grandchildren for their first flight. It was OK for that purpose, especially since the readers are terrific at sound-effects
I bought this book based on the reviews but it is definitely not for an 18mo old. The language and pictures are for an older child. My son has excellent language but this book is not for little ones. We are going on an airplane in a few months and wanted to prepare him for the trip. There are only about 3 pages that would make any sense to him. I'm very disappointed.
My kids will be taking their first airplane trip this summer and I was searching the Internet for a good book to introduce them to an airplane. This book is great! It goes into pretty good detail about lots of different things about the airport and plane. I love that it also incorporates the sounds things make. Airplanes are quite noisy and as my children are a bit sensitive to sounds this was a great way to show them all the things that will make crazy sounds on their ride.
This is such a great book! The illustrations are bold and colorful, and the text is simple but encourages a lot of play and interaction during the reading of the book. The text has a nice rhyme and rhythm, and actually gives a straight-forward explanation of what are all those sounds you hear on the plane, in only a few words!My two-year-old loves this book -- he "reads" it to himself, and to me. (He has it memorized.) The noises that are part of the book make this story accessible to very young children. The book really draws a child into participating in reading, rather than just asking us to read it to him.I would recommend this book to anyone with pre-school age children, especially if they are interested in airplanes or machine noises.
One picture is absolutely hilariously disturbing... the child spills a drink on his lap and looks as though he's going to die. I can't help but mention it because it's so hilarious... so out of place. This book is actually a great introduction for a child before his or her first flight. It talks about all of the things you will hear and see on the flight.
