I purchased this book from Bud's Art Books a few years back. Although Gary Tonge is a highly skilled landscape and architectural/vehicle artist, I was more disappointed than enlightened by this book. Yes, he painted a great-looking "angel" illustration, but I certainly would've liked to have seen more figure work. As an aspiring artist, I'm more biased toward figures human, animal, alien, and everything in between, so please take this with a grain of salt. I do prefer more figure and character illustrations more than architecture and vehicles, though I can appreciate these, too. Still, there are art & illustration books which are superior to this one. If anyone is interested in more diverse subject matter, I'd like to suggest Imagine FX magazine and any books related to fantasy art and illustration, such as the Spectrum annuals and other art showcase books.Even though I'm not a huge fan of the book, I'd recommend it to someone who is into fantasy landscapes, cityscapes, and vehicle design.
If you're looking for a detailed tutorial of how to create a digital piece, well this ISN'T for you. It's for people already experienced with Photoshop at basic level, even for intermediates who haven't learned a few basic tips and need refinement, as well as those already with artistic background. Sorry intro users, but buy the book when you're at the basic or intermediate levels.It gives advice such as what format to preferably save your digital work on Photoshop, constantly save your work when you're creating a digital piece, always have backup versions of your work, working from traditional sketch to digital painting, creating a comfortable workspace for yourself, etc. It also gives advice on how to effectively use your light source, colors, textures, composition, aka Design fundamentals, and features within Photoshop such as creating your own brushes, control of opacity, etc. And this book mainly pertains to Photoshop users as well, but gives reference to only one of other good popular programs out there unfortunately. It's not worth it's original price though, so I got it used and it's still in great condition.My star rating is debatable, but it'll do for now. The quality of the book's material and its art is worth a little more than it's words, but still not enough for the original price it's sold for. They gotta make money I guess.
This book not only showcases beautiful and inspiring works of art, it provides advice and guidelines for artists hoping to develop their talents further. Be aware that the book does NOT provide step-by-step instructions, lists of tools, etc. on how each piece is done; that's to its credit. Rarely do artists do things in the exact same way. Gary Tonge simply presents his work and explains the concepts and processes that went into it. There are some examples of composition provided, although not with concrete rules, and an explanation of how light diffuses in some of his pieces, as well as sections on the importance of color, scale, perspective, and texures. This is not a rulebook or a stiff outline of steps. This is a guidebook. It offers suggestions and leaves the interpretation up to the reader. If you want a step-by-step tutorial, this is not for you. If you want inspiration and an understanding of what makes Tonge's art so dynamic, it's an invaluable text regardless of your choice of medium.
Much of what other reviewers say is true: Bold Visions will not please you if you are hoping to follow a tutorial that will tell you exactly what to do, when and how to do it. Rather, it will go through the steps needed in different methods for creating a digital painting in a superficial manner, yet it will be enough for someone with a little experience, because it serves as a guide that still lets you create your own art and does not make you dependant on the tutorial.The author also tries to cover every single aspect of digital painting, from arranging your workspace and computer to colour and light, painting thechniques and processes, themes and so on, as well as a sort of "epilogue" that recommends online art communities and gives advice for aspiring professional artists. Although this intention to cover lots of aspects again forces the author (at least in a 128 page book) not to dive very deep into them, it is a very entertaining and pleasant read.However, the reason why Bold Visions shines are the images. In every page you'll find high quality paintings printed with a beautiful finish that will automatically make you enjoy the book. You don't even have to read the text if you don't want to (although most of the times it will be very useful and it will complement the images), because the paintings will inspire you to paint your own. I found myself being much more productive artistically after I got this book, as advertising as that sounds, and although my recent paintings are heavily influenced by Gary Tonge's, I think the book is just giving me the tools to find my own style and inspiration.Bold Visions is not a perfect book, but I can say it is interesting to read, beautiful to look at, and highly inspirational. For a relatively low price you will get a high quality work in almost every possible aspect, and I'm certain you will not regret it.
I bought this book hoping it would have some far out imagery to inspire me. I was not disappointed. Gary Tonge is a talented digital artist and his creative streak really shows through. This is not, however, much of a how to book. The examples are brief step by steps. If you're looking for a PhotoShop how too book, this is not the book for you. But if you love SciFi art and like to have desk top references handy of some fascinating art, this is a great book.
Good book, I'd say it goes hand-in-hand with Digital Painting Tricks & Techniques: 100 Ways to Improve Your CG Art. Get both for a good intro and skill development in digital painting!
