You can pray to "the force that is beyond our comprehension."I also love the fact that Anne stresses the importance of gratitude. In fact, this may be my favorite passage from the book:"Gratitude begins in our hearts and then dovetails into behavior. It almost always makes you willing to be of service, which is where the joy resides. It means that you are willing to stop being such a jerk. When you are aware of all that has been given to you, in your lifetime and the past few days, it is hard not to be humbled, and pleased to give back."Thank you, Anne Lamott. This book is worth your time and attention. I am so glad that I have it in hardback because I will keep it forever and reread it regularly; I am finished reading it and I just want to read it all over again.It is a book about getting through life. It is rich, raw, funny (hilarious, like all Annie Lamott) and written in language so stunning I would have to stop and just read and reread sentences. I feel as though my life has been broken open with a whole new attitude towards prayer, and even more, towards being alive. This is not a religious book at all, but a book for anyone who is spiritually-oriented and maybe especially for those who aren't, because the author writes about prayer in a way that every single person can relate to. This is a book about being real and true and simple and clear and about living a worthwhile life.Don't miss this book.Highly recommended.*****

Anne's book is on our Summer Series reading list at church. So at the last minute, I ordered the Kindle version and began reading Saturday night. The sermon was Sunday morning. For me this book is life changing. Today was my first day utilizing a template inspired from Anne for prayer. I typed my prayer into three categories: Help, Thanks, Wow. I can print my prayers and assemble my prayer journal.Some of us are better composing prayer at the keyboard and quite frankly, I believe God doesn't care what method you use to communicate with Him as long as we are in regular communication with Him, that is His hope.

Anne Lamott is one of my favorite authors. My favorites of her books are "Traveling Mercies", and "bird by bird". Anne sticks to the writing style of a mini essay for each chapter and it works well for her. Each new book begins where the last left off. Not in the sense of a sequel but as it follows where Anne is in her life at that particular time and what is the important topic on her mind.Lamott's latest book "Help, Thanks, Wow", is a good book. It has the short chapters and the rambling conversation that I expect from her books. The topic is one that grabbed me at first. I thought, here is a book that is going to simplify prayer and perhaps I will find comfort in it. Perhaps my expectations were too high as I felt that my questions were never answered. I had hoped for a footprint to follow, something more definitive.I still feel that it is a good book and worth taking a look at. However, if you're not familiar with Anne Lamott then this may not be the best of her books to start with.Sorrowfully, in the end I was left unfulfilled and a little bored.

This book was a little disappointing. Granted it did have some good moments through the book but I had a hard time finding a way to connect them together to make sense of of the book. Seemed be more random thoughts than a book.. For a "spiritual"book it has some words that I do not find appropriate. The sad part is the words don't add anything to the book I felt like the writer needed something to jar her readers awake.

Add more as you see fit.Here are some I decided to integrate immediately, after tossing my “To Do” list for the calendar:#27 – Choose To Be Happy – I never thought of it as a choice, and I sure do now and it’s enlightening.#34 – Be Kind To Others – this should not need to be pointed out, however, when it is we take notice.#44 – Invest Early and Invest Often – fortunately my husband did this and I am grateful for that today. This book is organized in a manner that would make it a useful tool for self-improvement. Reading it cover to cover is enjoyable, but I think the reader may obtain more benefit from reading one key principle a week over an entire year. The stories are beautifully written, very imaginative, delightfully irreverent, interesting. The writing deserves 5 stars. In terms of the art of bookmaking and design, it deserves 1 or 2 stars. The paper is cheap and the printing is poor quality. Because the paper is super-absorbent and uncoated, the ink soaks into the paper making the edges of the typography rough and uneven. It is a very thick book, and should have been split into two volumes so as to be less unwieldy and more pleasant to hold in your hand. If you don't care about book design and bookmaking, then by all means buy this edition for its superb content. Otherwise, go for a different edition.

To fully appreciate Collette, the reader should have a quiet afternoon, a bottle of chilled champagne, and a variety of expensive nibblies

These short stories (short short, or flash fiction) were radical for their day, and fit right in to new definitions for short stories. Colette was a force of nature.

Colette was one of the Great French writers in my opinion. Funny, sexy you just can't get any better. So much more to her writing than you think.

Although it's a translation, it's great work if you're interested to read about this aspect of french life in days gone by. Very interesting

An excellent text book

In order to appreciate this book, one must understand the history behind power system protective relaying. As the previous reviewers have mentioned, the two classic bibles in protective relaying is the Westinghouse Protective Relaying book and the Westinghouse T & D book. Lewis Blackburn put the former book together while he worked at Westinghouse and he had a hand in the second book as well. My father attended the Westinghouse training courses in the 1950's and his instructor was Lew Blackburn. Over time, Mr. Blackburn became a family friend and I grew up listening to them talk about the electric power industry and learned about the subject at the feet of the master. Even though I went into motors instead of relaying, I still enjoyed reading this book.After Mr. Blackburn retired from Westinghouse, he became a consultant and proceeded to put the material in this book together. It was a labor of love, for a lot of people have said that the practice of protective relying is like black magic because there are many correct ways to protect a system, they all have problems but it is up to the practitioner to determine the best solution for a given situation. Mr. Blackburn poured his years of experience and expertise into this book. He tried to do this in a systematic manner in order to reduce the amount of ambiguity usually associated with the black arts. I believe he has succeeded.I would agree with the others that the second edition was a letdown from the first, but then again, most first editions are more informative because authors wrote "their" book with the first edition, the following editions are ususally to answer the critics and publishers.

This book gets five stars due to the fact that it was written by Blackburn who is the most respected name in relaying. He has a number of chapters in the Westinghouse relaying book which is one of the "bibles" of the discipline. Protective Relaying is generalized so can be applied to all types/manufacturers of relays. It should be on the shelf of every protection engineer.This book is a little difficult for someone new to the discipline as well as being wordy regarding explanation of principles. The wordiness is likely due to it having little, if any, calculus therefore describing fundamentals rather than with the presentation of an equation (nothing against writing a book to a broad audience). For anyone with engineering background, I would also recommend Arc Flash Hazard Analysis and Mitigation by J. C. Das as an additional reference. This has some chapters on basic relaying that are a little easier to follow due to the more conventional presentation. It also gets into arc flash analysis which should be understood, at a minimum, by anyone in distribution relaying.

Being in System Protection for the past 6 years I have collected quite a nice library of books related to my field of protective relaying. I have used Blackburn's book until the pages are dog eared. It is generally the first book I grab off the shelf to start reviewing a protection topic or to refresh my memory. Blackburn did an excellent job with straight forward practical examples and applications...as you might expect from one of the masters in the field. This book along with the old Westinghouse Applied Protective Relaying book (relaying Bible) and the ABB T&D book (formerly Westinghouse book) cover the majority of topics a protection enginerd needs.

I have been using this book from 1st edition up to the third and it provides both a theoretical and application background so the reader can use it as the base to go for more specific info or for manufacturers applications guides.
