A well told story of what happend at Combat Outpost Keating (Afghanistan) over a 3 yr period. Including the final battle with hundreds of insurgents as they tried to overhelm this outpost. The story itself was well written by Jake (a famous war correspondent and CNN anchor). He interviewed many soldiers and their famlies in telling this story. A 5-star review for sure. I had my little war in Desert Shield/Desert Storm, but that was nothing compared to what these guys stationed in a VERY remote outpost (in a valley of all places) went thru.....Not all of the soldiers made it out. Very moving...brought some tears to my eyes. Just a few weeks earlier I read Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10 by Marcus Luttrell (another very good moving war story). Both these stories dealt with our troops fighting in a war in far off Afghanistan (the war that got overshadowed by the war in Iraq).I honestly cannot see anyone giving this book less than 4 stars. Jake Tapper did an excellent job. At first I was expecting more of a novel and it took a little while to get used to how he was writing this story. But once I did I was hooked. I did not see where he bashed anyone, and not every soldier was presented as a Sgt Rock type of character. These were real soldiers with real familes. These guys very much wanted to make it home. I was rooting for them all. Sometimes the military does dumb things (like selecting the location for CO Keating), but most of the time they get it right. Now this story deserves to be an HBO series like Generation Kill or Band of Brothers [Blu-ray]. This book should required reading at ALL the service academies.

The Outpost is incredibly well researched. As a soldier who was there, I can say Jake Tapper tells our story well. By focusing on a particular region of Afghanistan, not just a particular unit or person, The Outpost is able to provide a better overall picture of the war in Afghanistan and what the soldiers experienced in the most remote corner of that country. The Outpost, through exhaustive interviews and research, is able to combine the thoughts and decisions of commanders, with the actions of the soldiers in the field, and round it out with the reactions of the family and friends back at home to provide a complete understanding of the war and its effects on everyone involved. I personally enjoyed reading The Outpost and learning the thoughts of many of the officers I served with, who could not be as open about their true thoughts and feelings as they could until after that fact, and also learning of the trials and challenges of the units that replaced mine, and how the war continued to unfold in the remote mountains of Afghanistan that I called home for 16 months. The Outpost, is neither pro-war nor anti-war. It is the cold hard truth documenting a flawed strategy to tame an untamable remote corner of Afghanistan, as told through the story of the many soldiers who personally served there from 2006 through 2009. The Outpost brings to the reader many stories of heroes and leaders the world needs to know about.

I was with 1st ID 6/4 Cav at COP Keating/OP Fritschie. Jake Tapper's book does great justice for my unit, for an amazing man--Captain Robert J. Yllescas, and for the rest of the officers who were in charge. I was very impressed with how in-depth Jake went into his coverage of our story, and with how well it was written. Like the title of the review reads, I spent a year at Keating/Fritschie, and even I was learning new details while reading the book--because Jake took his time and got the real stories. Smiles and cries, that about sums up my experience reading it. Anyone who wants to understand what true sacrifice is should read this book. Jake, thank you for telling our story to the world! I cannot thank you enough man. Thank you all, read our story, share it with your friends and family.

A really great book, it was emotionally draining for me Tapper did a great job bring the people to life then to have them killed. As a Marine Corps combat Vet this book really confirmed that the Military leadership has learned nothing from history and are still making the same mistakes over and over, when I saw the pictures of where the outpost was my thoughts were who in their right frigging mind would put a combat outpost in the bottom of a valley surrounded by mountains absolute lunacy by Army command staff. I've read numerous books on the war in Afghanistan and have come to the that anyone above the rank of Caption never ventures away from the rear with the gear. This book should be required reading at West Point and Annapolis.

I served at Camp Keating for 15 months. Jake Tapper has done an incredible job on The Outpost. This book is well-researched, well-written, and accurate. If you want to know what our Soldiers are experiencing while fighting in Afghanistan, read this book.

All chapters are clearly developed, explained, organized and illustrated. It is worth reading either as a first try into GIS database design or as an authoritative source for on-going model design appraisal. It only lacks a chapter devoted to network modeling such as those employed by electric, water or gas utilities. The water hydro model does address 'networks' but it is of a very different sort and is not apt for utility modeling.

Great

Great introduction to designing ESRI geodatabases.

This is the best one

This book provides a good introduction of steps and principles in designing geodatabases and the importance of information products and identifying thematic layers. The book presents 7 complex models: streams and river networks, census units and boundaries, addresses and locations, parcels and cadastre, surveying federal lands, using raster data, cartography and the base map. For each model they present the features, feature data sets, relationships, and topology rules. Readers working in these 7 areas will probably gain most from the book. I would have also liked simpler examples and more design principles on grouping features into feature data sets. One of the strengths of this book is in stressing the value of topology rules, and feature data sets are needed for topology rules. With a database background, I would have liked fuller exploration of database relationships and normality contrasted with GIS relationship classes, relates, and joins, since data is often "flattened" when put into GIS. Readers of this should probably start with Modeling Our World: The Esri Guide to Geodatabase design by Michael Zeiler.

The subject is considerably more specialised that designing a relational data base. The book is part of ESRI's ongoing way to publicise geodatabases, and hence ultimately drive demand for their products. So keep in mind that what is really being sold here is not the book but mindshare. Yours. The text has extensive explanations as to what you might need in a geodatabase, as well as what is technically feasible to put in it. It also suggests that you consider what you want your users to be able to do. And use this in no small way to drive the design requirements. Software developers will recognise this as the gathering of scenarios from stakeholders. So you probably should canvas your potential users, if this is at all possible.

I used this book for developing GIS data layers. The book explains geodatabase relationships and concept very well. It also provides a lot of case studies and examples on how to create parcel, street, census, etc. geodatabase schemas. I highly recommend this book for someone who has a basic understanding of RDBMS and geodatabase design.Green Bay, WI
