I must say I am quite impressed Dr. Coile’s book. I have had many different all breed books over the years but this one, for total content, has become an instant favorite. It’s written so a novice can understand and yet doesn’t insult an experienced owner’s intelligence. The easy wipe off cover surface and sturdy paper will withstand heavy use from the youngest of readers.Each breed is covered in two pages, with each with a photo: one stacked and the other in a working pose or in a more relaxed natural setting. The “At a Glance” section not only answers the questions most often asked to find that family pet; but addresses specifics an experienced person might use to learn about a new breed. A judge could even use it as a quick reference guide.Books that cover all breeds of dogs usually furnish a history, a standard and touch on temperament. This book goes more than one step further. Other in depth sections are labeled "Illustrated Standard," “Temperament,” “Upkeep,” “Health,” and “Form and Function.”This lovely hard back, coffee table edition is quite heavy. Many may find a eReader version more to their liking. I love my hard cover copy but, as soon as I can, I will also be purchasing the Kindle version for quick reference.

This book has numeric ratings for major dog traits such as friendliness toward other dogs and people, train-ability, watchfulness, etc. I found these at-a-glance ratings to be very beneficial when reviewing each dog breed. It is the best dog book I've ever seen. Some complain that the book doesn't cover enough breeds. But, the trade off is that each breed includes wonderful color pictures and a long narrative of the breeds traits. Each breed has 2 pages of photos and information. If you're looking for a detailed encyclopedia of dogs, you've found it with this one.

I was simply looking fot a book for my kids to look through since they encounter different dog breeds alot. This has become my favorite because the wealth of detail and the amazing picture that are in this book was unexpected. I had a book like this when I was a kid and loved it. I always referenced it when I saw a new dog and wanted to show everyone what i had learned. My niece loves dogs so much so I figured this book would be perfect for her. She is 7 and very smart; she may not be able to use all the info in this book now, but this is a book that can be kept for a lifetime. I still have mine! :)

Gave this book to my granddaughter, who's 8, and she loves it - knows more about dog breeds than I do now, and is much more prepared to choose a dog when we go looking. Otherwise it's also a real fun read even if you aren't actively looking for a pet because there's lots of history and other info too.

Great book for learning about dog breeds. It includes the history as well as the modern day roles. The charts at the top are particularly helpful for comparing and contrasting. My only complaint is that some popular breeds, such as pit bulls, are left out.

Have the first and second Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds, so wanted to update and get the third edition since new breeds were added.Just hope they keep using AKC show quality pics (There are a few dog breed pics shown that aren't the greatest representatives of the breed).But the info is great for any dog lover!

Took a course in "nano" and this was the text. Well written and and enjoyable introduction to a most important field.

This book is so great if you are not a professional or not that much into deep information about the subject but it suggests some books for those interested in more deep information, but as I said if u r not a professional u will get the whole idea about the nanotechnology :D

I enjoy that subject, so any book on it has my interest.

It's a tad bit technical for the lay-person, but it will definitley give one a solid grasp of what nanotech is all about.

I bought this book to learn about mummies with my first graders. That is NOT an easy subject to teach with such little children, as you're talking about dead people. It all started when they asked, "Are mummies real?" I replied with the truth, "Well, yes, but they're not monsters that chase you around going, 'Whoooooo!'" And thus began my search for an age-appropriate, non-fiction book about mummies. Let me assure you, that doesn't exist. However, that being said, with lots of stopping for commentary and answering questions, this was really good. Some were scared, some were grossed out, almost all were fascinated. And you're dealing with ancient religious beliefs, so at one point, I had to tell them, "That is a good question. People believe different things. You should ask you parents what they believe." One little girl told me after I finished reading, "This is kind of disgusting, but it's also kind of interesting." I could've hugged her on the spot. It's probably very different if you're reading it one-on-one with your child, but when you're tackling a room full of little, eager minds, this is a pretty good place to start. I recommend it, but be prepared to stop along the way to explain things, ask questions, and answer questions. I also recommend having additional non-fiction books for them to browse, but this was the best I found to actually read to them.

My 1st grader was intrigued with the Mummies ever since they studied them in school. I wanted something educational but interesting and this was definitely it. He was even ahead of the game when the teacher went over how they mummify because he had seen the steps in the book!

I bought this as a gift for my 7 year old nephew, who is fascinated with mummies. He loved it.

We can't say enough good things about the entire National Geographic Kids books, my 4 year old son loves these. We wanted to get him interested in science early and he always goes back to these books. So far, I think we purchased 6 of the series and he loves them all.

I love these books they have vocabulary, large print and are challenging without being frustrating. They also teach a great deal about the subject.

My 5 year old loves this book but I cant figure out why because the pictures are kind of gross. I would not have thought that this kind of book would be a good book for kids but it is well written and very educational. So for now I am stuck reading this book and having to look at the pictures every night.

I bought several of this books for my children, they love them so much that they have now a big collection, and I love the fact that they actually read them and are learning a lot, they come with different reading levels for each child reading skills.

My five year old son loves this book. He's asked for it for over a year and we finally gave in and let him read it, worried that it would be a bit scary. Not so. He's fascinated by it, it's educational, and easy to understand as well as interesting. Great book.
