I found out about this book while watching one of our favorite youtube channels Sew the Land. I thought it would be perfect to go along with our nature studies at home for my sons whom I homeschool.Edith Holden would walk, bike, and travel about in search for beautiful nature. She'd write down entries each month of the year of 1906. In these entries she talks about flowers, plants, animals, weather, and includes poems and drawings/paintings of the things she saw. It was so interesting and we learned a lot.The only tough part about this is that there are sometimes large words I have never heard of in my life and her hand writing at times was not easy for me to read (for the most part she had really beautiful hand writing though).

This is a really cool book. Great for inspiring children in making a nature journal. My daughter has loved tracing the pictures for her nature journal and using it as inspiration in her journal. This nature journal has such beautiful illustrations, poems and quotes to inspire the budding nature journalist. It also includes many of the common and scientific names of various plants and wildlife found in the area the author studied.

I originally bought this book to cut up and use in my journals. I just CANNOT do that! I LOVE the illustrations! In fact, I ordered another copy to take with me on our vacation for inspiration!

I really wanted to like this book being a naturalist and Horticulturist myself. I was really looking forward to reading Ms. Holden's impressions and chronicles of the nature unfolding around her for that special year in her life. However, I was sadly disappointed as almost 50% of the entries were poems. I am not a poem person and unless you enjoy reading poems by Shakespeare, Browning, Wordsworth and Burns, I would pass this by. While I did enjoy the actual diary entries, the main redeeming feature for me was the beautiful watercolor renderings of flowers, birds, leaves and insects. That alone made the purchase worthwhile for me.

Had my copy of this book for many years was very touched by the beauty of the illustrations and the keen observations. There is art and poetry everywhere! This is a woman who treasured every day and saw the wonder that is freely given to everyone. True riches for those who have the eyes and heart to receive them. I love this book and have bought a copy to share with a very special friend who will love it too. There is so much in the world that is disheartening. Seeing Edith Holden's painting and her choice of verses and comments confirms that there is a grand plan and this beauty does not occur by accident. A visual, but not overt reminder that "His eye is on the sparrow... etc.". It is enriching and comforting and so beautiful. Most people want to or try to keep a diary at some point. She has really done it wonderfully. Thank you Amazon for making it possible to share this loveliness with a new and appreciative reader.

The book I got was a library salvage, which was what was expected, so I didn't mind the wear and tear. The book itself is great. It is almost exclusively drawings of birds and plants, with tidy handwritten text all around them. It's fun and classy and has a nice authentic feel to it.

Beautiful book, or diary!! It's a copy but i can still appreciate the beauty in the words this lady wrote and the beauty in her watercolor work. I would love to one day, look at the original copy of this....its certainly would be inspiring!!!

This book is absolutely delightful. The illustrations are beautiful. Edith Holden’s notes transport you in time, leaving you with the feeling of being in the meadow with her, almost to the point of the sunlight on your face and the earth beneath your feet. The poetry is beautiful. The seller was wonderful, even including a little gift clearly chosen based on my purchase.

Review

Booklist, May 1, 2012:"As in his earlier books in the series, the popular Feinstein takes readers inside a major sports venue, supplies fascinating details, and serves up a satisfying mystery."Kirkus Reviews, April 1, 2012:"As is his wont, Feinstein salts the cast with real athletes and other figures from Michael Phelps to Bob Costas. He folds plenty of dramatic sports action as well as behind-the-scenes banter and personal and family conflict into a plot that moves smoothly to a suspenseful climax...A fast-paced caper."

If you like Olympic swimming you will like this book because it is all about Olympic swimming. I thought the book was slow to read there was not much mystery going on until the very end. Not the most interesting book I have read but I stuck with it.

This book is a lot of fun and very timely. As always, Feinstein knows a lot about the sport he writes about and brings a sense of humor as well as a mix of real and fictional characters to make the story more believable. I have purchased all of the books in this series for my teenage daughter and then read them myself. For an adult, they are brain candy. This book is a quick read that gives some inside understanding of the Olympics with appealing and realistic protagonists.

Rush for the Gold is, for the most part, a really good book. John Feinstein's imagery helped me to imagine I was with Susan Carol in the pool as part of the competition. The conflicts were engaging and kept the book moving at a fairly good clip. The only problem I had is that Susan Carol, as a character, was a little flat. She was too good and didn't struggle at all internally with the a desire to win and to be recognized versus the need to do the right thing and remain loyal to a friend. Real people would. If she had, it would have taken this from a good book to a great book.

This is the first book that I read from these author's mysteries series. Even when it's considered a book for kids and young readers I enjoyed it a lot. The main characters are Susan Carol Anderson and Stevie Thomas, two clever teenagers with a set of talents of their own, who team up to figure out what's going on with Susan Carol's agents and reps. Both are sports writers and reporters, but she's also a swimming athlete and a shining new star in the Olympian horizon. However the stakes are high because there are millions of dollars worth of sponsorships in the game. How far can everyone go to get what they want? It's definitely a good mystery book and one that young readers might really enjoy.

My son is reading this book for school. We were very happy to find this available on kindle. I haven't read it personally but my middle school age son is really enjoying it.

Good middle school read.

Great gift.
