Amazon.com Review

For a quarter-century, Lockheed's Mach 3 SR-71A Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft dominated the skies as no other. The men that flew the 55-ton "Habu" (so dubbed by Okinawans near one of its bases because of its resemblance to a local deadly black snake) at 80,000 feet and 33 miles per minute were the rarest of fraternities, and author and former 9th Recon Wing commander Richard Graham provides a score of them--as well as key ground personnel--a generous forum for their self-penned recollections here. Where Graham's first book, SR-71 Revealed: The Inside Story, dealt more with the Blackbird's remarkable hardware and history, this volume details the human dimensions of the SR-71 program, from its dangerous days of development and testing through decades of intelligence-gathering operations in the world's hot spots, to its final, bittersweet confrontation with the one foe it couldn't elude: self-serving Pentagon politics. Inspired by flying a plane that often seemed to have a mind of its own--and a sometimes malicious one at that--the anecdotes here are seasoned with a compelling mix of boyish humor, sheer terror, and enviable camaraderie. As Graham's fellow SR-71 pilot and author Brian Shul once noted, more people have stood atop Mt. Everest than have flown what remains the world's fastest, highest-flying jet. (The author is donating all royalties to the J.T. Vida Memorial Fund, set up to preserve Blackbird 972, whose 1990 transcontinental, record-setting retirement flight is recounted herein, currently housed at the Smithsonian Museum) --Jerry McCulley

If you love flying and airplanes, or are current or ex-force and find the SR-71 fascinating, this is a great book!!I was at McConnell AFB in the late '60s when an SR-71 made an emergency landing and I saw it from 200' - I was spellbound! Two crewmen climbed out in high altitude flight suits (X-15 style) and unzipped them, pulled them down, and there stood two business men in suits and ties!James Bond stuff!Fuel poured out from underneath and Security Police were everywhere with M-16s and I was told to turn away. And the subsequent takeoff with blue flame shock diamonds was even more spectacular!! Pure magic!!, the stuff ofscience fiction! It impressed me almost as much as the pilots I met with South East Asia 100 missions completed, the "Century pilots" - I bow to you guys!!!This book describes all of the YF-12/SR-71 aircraft, and crew, characteristics in fine detail. The aircraft, and the book, are testament to the genius of Kelly Johnson and the personnel at the Lockheed "Skunkworks"This book is not the only SR-71 history book, there are at least four really good ones, but this is one of the best!It is a shame the SR-71 program was tanked so soon after it was developed.Hoorah HABU!👍🏻 Hoorah to the crews👍🏻!

Donn Byrnes' discussion of Cat II testing at Edwards AFB brought back memories. I do recall that conversation with Maj. Hurley ( in Spring 1965 ) to "find the cause of the cooling air problem, or move my bed into the hangar until it was found and fixed, he wanted a solution not a shooting". I am impressed that my contribution to the success of the Blackbird has been remembered and praised after so many years. God Bless Ken Hurley and Donn Byrnes.May God Bless all the crews who have had the opportunity to fly and maintain the Blackbird over some 20+ years.Thank you Rich for writing the book.Frank Doyle, the lowest ranking officer in the SR-71 / YF-12 Test Force @ EAFB. ( Feb. 65 - Aug. 67 )

Really fascinating book. Well written with all personal stories. I spent 3 and 1/2 years (Dec 1981 to Apr 1985) living on Kaden AFB on Okinawa. I have many fond memories of watching the Habus taking off and landing. The night time missions are the best. Just to hear the bird take off was unique as no other plane made the same sound. The lavender flames and diamonds brought every hair on my arms to stand straight up. They always flew the same track in the evening sky. It really made me quite proud to think that Kelly Johnson and crew designed and built the planes and the men who flew and maintained them.

Very interesting book, with intimate details about this legendary aircraft. I'm retired Air Force Intel and this bird was the highlight of airbreathing assets of the USAF. Highly recommend this book for anybody with an interest in military flight

Wonderful reading. Was always awe struck with this majestic lady of the sky. Reading about the aircrews just make her more enjoyable

Always great reading from Rich G. Get it now!

Book came in new condition. A great value...

Review

"Dissent on the Margins offers an excellent contribution to religious studies and serves as a welcome new resource for those interested in the history of lived religion in the Soviet Union."--Kathleen Hiatt, Journal of Chruch and State"Dissent on the Margins is an amazing piece of research and analysis: sophisticated in its conceptualization, exhaustive in its research (in hitherto-secret state, party, and even police archives), this study shows how a small religious group survived decades of Soviet repression, won legalization in 1991, and has since expanded its flock to several hundred thousand adherents. A must-read for historians, political scientists, and sociologists of religion." --Gregory L. Freeze, Victor and Gwendolyn Beinfield Professor of History, Brandeis University"This thoughtful and skillfully researched monograph tells the history of the Jehovah's Witness in the Soviet Union and three of its successor states. It recounts the troubled relationship between state and 'sect,' arguing that the survival of Witness communities shows the limits of state power even in a repressive country like the USSR. The historical sections draw on an impressive, and carefully referenced, body of archival material but Baran also takes her story forward into the first decade of the twenty-first century. It will appeal not only to students of Soviet history but also to all those following the religious situation in the post-Soviet space today." --Miriam Dobson, author of Khrushchev's Cold Summer: Gulag Returnees, Crime, and the Fate of Reform after Stalin"This is the first comprehensive treatment in English of Jehovah's Witnesses in the Soviet Union."-- Hiroaki Kuromiya, Nova Religio"Baran has produced an excellent work that analyzes the Soviet Union from the perspective of a marginal group while making it relevant to the Soviet story as a whole."--Andrew Drozd, Slavic and East European Journal "...[T]his book offers an unusually well-informed, longue durée account of Soviet and post-Soviet religious history. Moreover, it rewards readers with insights from a fascinating array of voices." --Journal of Modern History "Baran s book can be considered extremely successful. She has given us an entirely new and comprehensive account of how this organization was created and how it functioned in the USSR from the beginning of the 1920s to the 1950s."--Slavic Review

makes a person think! this is happening again

I have purchased a few books about Jehovah's Witnesses but I haven't finished reading this book yet...but I know it will meet my expectations.....I love reading about what my spiritual family have endured...Two of the persons killed in Vegas last month were Jehovah Witnesses!

Well written and easy to read.

It has been said that where there is no temple in the forum, the state tends to assume the role of God. In terms of dictating what is and is not acceptable behaviour the atheist Soviet state ruled supreme following Stalin's revolution in 1918 until the late 1980s. During most of this time, despite some periods of relative calm, there could be little toleration for subjects who were not prepared to support Communist ideals. One group who inevitably found themselves at loggerheads with the ruling elite were Jehovah's Witnesses who, as Baran's title suggests, lived both geographically and socially on the margins of Soviet society. While some may consider the discussion of the resistance of a small religious community under a Communist regime as simply an interesting study in history, more informed readers will find the subject most timely, especially in view of recent legislative changes which appear to threaten religious freedom in a way some thought would never be seen again in Russia following glasnost and perestroika. Indeed, outside the former Soviet Union itself, so little has been written about JWs in this region that this book may be considered not so much a welcome addition, but - with the exception of some fine articles by Zoe Knox - more a necessary introduction to the subject.Baran is to be congratulated for compiling such a comprehensive record of resistance from multiple sources, especially for her personal interviews. Although not a Witness herself, I would suggest she knows what makes them tick. The fact that she is fluent in Russian and can read the Ukrainian and Romanian languages helps enormously. More than this, she recites these accounts in an evocative manner that engages the mind of the reader. No easy task. The history lesson starts in World War II, when the Soviet Union annexed territories along its western borders only to find small, but close-knit Witness communities which doggedly refused to modify their beliefs and practices to suit the demands of the Soviet authorities. However, Baran shows the Witnesses were by no means passive victims of the Soviet state but, as their name suggests, outspoken Witnesses promoting a Godly Kingdom which promised to crush and bring an end to man-made governments, Communism included. Consequently she recounts intriguing stories of individuals gatecrashing and undermining lectures on atheism simply by asking basic questions (What is the law of nature? Can there be a law without a lawgiver? What came first, wisdom or matter?), bus drivers preaching to their passengers, children failing to follow nationalistic ceremonies in schools, secret bunkers stashed full of typewriters printing illegal Watchtowers and even Witnesses preaching to officers who arrive at their home to arrest them. Even so, it would be a mistake to think Baran's work is a hagiography. Baran also records instances of families split apart when a child abandons the faith, individuals who lie to avoid arrest and elders who compromise under severe interrogation.Blundering authorities endeavouring to curtail Witness activity have a habit of scoring political own goals. Two instances Baran relates in some detail, were termed Operations North and South and involved the unannounced state sponsored overnight mass deportation of thousands of Soviet Witnesses, including children and the elderly, who were put on cattle cars, and railroaded into forced exile on nights in July 1949 and April 1951 en route to Siberian work camps. Short term the action appeared to provide a wholesale elimination of Witnesses considered a threat to Soviet society. Long term however, as Baran states, "the Soviet Union had made a monumental error" in enabling the Witnesses to make new converts in previously unreached areas or, as the Watchtower wryly commented, "The government has paid their fare to new territories to preach the Kingdom message." In 1965, the state removed the terms of exile, but continued to threaten Witnesses, who suffered job discrimination, police harassment, media prejudice and the public scorn of their neighbours. One subject of particular interest involved the path to legalisation. Earlier attempts by the Soviet state to eliminate the Witnesses had failed as they continued to smuggle Watchtower literature into the USSR, to meet and preach covertly. Indeed, it was said that even a Witness in a punishment cell in the strictest of camps could still manage to receive the latest Watchtower issue from Brooklyn. As a result, by the time of the Breshnev era the state took a more strategic approach. With the intention of controlling religious opponents, the authorities hoped to register the Witnesses so as to monitor their activities more closely. However, the Witnesses insisted that there should "no strings attached" so that they would be allowed to practice their faith as they did in Western democratic countries, a step too far for the state. As a result, the Witnesses concluded it would be better to remain unregistered. It took until the late 1980s for advances in registration to take place. As Baran notes, "in the end, the Witnesses version of legalisation won out, as the Gorbachev-era state agreed to register the Witnesses on the terms of the Governing Body."In her introduction, Baran acknowledges regarding Witnesses that "While I know their perspective on events as devout believers may differ from mine as a historian, I hope that they can find value in this account of their remarkable history." She is right on both counts: Witnesses will disagree on occasion with her interpretation of some events, but they will also be impressed and find much value in her enthralling work. So where would a Witness perspective differ than Baran's? I will concentrate on this while holding considerable admiration for her work. One area involves context. Baran understandably sees the experience of Witnesses beside their Second World War experience elsewhere, when they even faced state opposition in several democratic countries. I prefer to see their experience in a wider context of the last century during which the Bible Students/Witnesses have existed peacefully alongside hundreds of governments in multiple countries. In the rare cases where conflict between the two groups has occurred this has usually, though not always, been either under totalitarian regimes or democratic governments facing extreme circumstances (i.e. war).Another involves definition. As had been the case in Nazi Germany, the Witnesses in Russia saw their resistance as spiritually necessitated by an extreme government which made unreasonable demands which they could not keep without compromising their belief in and responsibilities toward their God, Jehovah. Commentators have tended to see Hitler's suppression of Witnesses as a sign of State insecurity and paranoia. However Baran sees things differently in respect the Soviet Union by contending that the Witnesses "did represent a real threat by their refusal to participate in Soviet society and obey secular authority." She considers that while the Witness stand was religiously motivated, it had political implications, and since its underground organisation showed similarity with those of political dissidents, it is understandable that the regime considered them political enemies. In determining whether an action is religious or political, I would argue that the motivation and intention of the believer is a more reliable gauge than the designation of the ruling authority and that it is inevitable that similarities exist between any organisations, religious or political, when they are driven underground by the imperative of survival. Quite simply, I question the ability of such an extreme regime to make a sound judgement in these circumstances. Given the anti-religious stance of the Communist state it is inevitable that the authorities saw the Witness stand as political rather than religious. In their religiously myopic eyes, for them to have seen it as anything else would, of course, have been to indirectly honour something it considered to be an exercise in unreality. Indeed, as Baran notes, "the characterisation of the Witnesses as a political organization and not a religion acted as a further justification for its continued illegality." It is so much easier to justify suppressing an opponent one sees as 'political' whereas doing so to a religious minority has implications relating to human rights and smacks of overreaction.Baran brings her study very much up to date by considering the rapid growth of Witnesses in Russia, Moldova and the Ukraine since 1991 and the corresponding backlash of anti-cult group propaganda which has permeated the news media to the extent that the term 'totalitarian sect' has now been used to label Witnesses. Despite their international status, Jehovah's Witnesses are still perceived to be very much an American religion in Russia and the Transnistrian Moldovan Republic and resented accordingly. Recent legislative changes appear to threaten their activities with the likelihood that they will once more be driven underground. Even so, Baran notes that "ultimately, the legal fate of Soviet Witnesses and the international Society make it clear that Witnesses will continue to exist, to preach, and to meet together as a faith community, regardless of the circumstances."What lesson might be learned by Baran's excellent study? How should a government deal with citizens who have no interest in supporting its political philosophy but provide, as I see it, only an idealogical challenge? When governments treat them aggressively, as Baran notes, this merely fulfils the Witnesses expectations and reaffirms the Witnesses faith that they are indeed Christ's followers. Despite knowing this fact, opposing governments have repeatedly taken harsh measures and, in so doing, encouraged adherents to reach this conclusion. As a result, Witnesses have been viewed as 'the canary in the coal mine' in terms of human rights issues, in that they provide an early warning system for other endangered minorities whose suppression will likely follow. Since even the most extreme forms of governments have not yet been able to rid themselves of the Witnesses, might a more successful approach therefore be to tolerate these views and direct attentions away from repressive measures toward constructing the society that their manifestos initially promise? Just a thought!Extending this reasoning further, I now reach a theoretical conclusion that is certainly not anything Baran herself proposes. It is the Witnesses belief that without God "man cannot direct his own step" successfully to bring about the utopian society that political parties promise. If, somehow, something remotely like utopia could be satisfactorily achieved by them it may be argued that this argument would be disproved and that, as a consequence, there would no longer be any Jehovah's Witnesses. Meanwhile, until governments manage to deliver on their manifesto promises and provide lasting stable societies that don't threaten minority groups and truly satisfy the long term aspirations their citizens desire, I would suggest that the Witnesses, who do not support anti-government protest marches or militant activism, are actually useful to society in respectfully reminding governments of their human frailties, how far they have fallen short of their lofty ideals and the need to pull their socks up. In this they bring to mind both a scriptural citation (1 Corinthians 1:27-29) and a character from King Lear. The Royal Shakespeare Company writes:"As Shakespeare conceives it, the Fool is a servant and subject to punishment ('Take heed, sirrah – the whip ' 1:4:104) and yet Lear's relationship with his fool is one of friendship and dependency. The Fool acts as a commentator on events and is one of the characters ... who is fearless in speaking the truth. The Fool ... ridicules Lear's actions and situation in such a way that audiences understand the point ... His 'mental eye' is the most acute in the beginning of the play: he ... has the foresight to see that Lear's decision will prove disastrous."

This bittersweet story is a page turner. Felix and Bailey deserve a romantic relationship and to an extent they get it. That's the sweet part. The bitter part is the behavior they receive from others. Neither deserve the bitter parts. This is well written, sexual situations not graphic and their feelings are in the open. The math parts are an interesting addition and cement their love for each other. One of the better YA stories. The author NEEDS to write a sequel

Like most Americans, I sat transfixed before my TV set on September 11, 2001, completely transfixed by the unfolding disaster on our shores. Time and time again, I watched that relentless tattoo of images cross my TV screen: hijacked passenger jets flying at full speed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center; the twin towers of that magnificent structure collapsing to the ground, one right after the other, with thousands of people inside them; and a new generation of heroes -- firefighters and police officers -- working round the clock to find survivors of these horrific events. As I watched events unfold on that fateful day, I kept getting this nagging feeling that this story all seemed too familiar. Where had I heard it before? Was it a movie I had seen? A book I had read? Then I remembered. Tom Clancy's novel, "Debt of Honor." At the time of its publication in 1994, it was the latest in the continuing saga of Jack Ryan, that fictional Central Intelligence Agency operative in several of Clancy's previous novels.By the time I read "Debt of Honor" in 1994, I had found myself growing tired of Clancy's books. Each one seemed infinitely longer than its predecessor, filled with more complex twists and turns of plot; laced with more of Clancy's tiresome personal political philosophy; and filled with plots and subplots that seemed progressively more far-fetched.When I finished "Debt of Honor," I thought Clancy had really out-done himself by creating a plot that was so unrealistic that it bordered on the ludicrous. In his usual highly charged, "grab 'em by the throat and don't let 'em go 'til the last page" fashion, Clancy took me on quite a journey. In retrospect, it was a journey I should have paid more attention to!For me, "Debt of Honor" was vintage Clancy: lots of interesting "techno-war" stuff, but not much else. Despite being unrealistic to the point of absurdity, the plot is indeed well crafted and quite exciting. It's pretty easy to get caught up in the chain of events that Clancy creates, even though you, the reader, will probably have a pretty fair idea of where the book is headed by the halfway point......Or will you?One of the major reasons for the tremendous popularity of Tom Clancy's novels over the years has been their almost uncanny ability to foreshadow future events, as well as future trends in military technology and geopolitical thinking. One of Clancy's greatest strengths as a writer of fiction is the meticulous research he does before ever setting pen to paper (or, in modern parlance, before cranking up the ol' word processor and "inputting data.") Even with their frequently fantastic plots and subplots, Clancy's novels always have a realistic "feel" to them. I suppose that's why I continue reading them, even though their plots are wearing thin and seem to reach further and further into the realm of impossibility, thereby rendering the impossible distinctly possible. "Rendering the impossible distinctly possible" is exactly what happened with "Debt of Honor;" for this seemingly incredible plot foreshadowed last September's terrorist attacks in a truly chilling fashion.Last September, life really did tragically imitate art. And, in light of those catastrophic events, the plot of "Debt of Honor" doesn't seem quite so far-fetched after all.Give Tom Clancy his due. He did his homework, drew some pretty somber conclusions about what just might happen from his research, and concocted a plot that really should have served as a warning to all of us: "America, let's get our act together... the next time we're attacked, it will be in the least expected ways. It will involve what our government now calls rather euphemistically "asymmetrical warfare." And we, as a nation, are not prepared to defend ourselves for what is surely coming."Because I pooh-poohed "Debt of Honor," as so much "Clancy fancy," judging it "too outrageous," I dismissed the author's vitally important message. I suspect a lot of people who read this book might've done the same.In hindsight, it's scary just how accurate a prediction Clancy made in "Debt of Honor." What's even scarier is that he continued sounding the same message in the sequel to this book, entitled "Executive Orders." Its premise: biological weapons in the hands of state-sponsored middle eastern terrorists.

Tom Clancy was known as a thorough, detailed and meticulous writer. Stellar research, with a firm understanding and grasp of facts from diverse fields of expertise, he knew how to spin a yarn into a compelling and exciting story. This novel was no different than his others in that regard. Reader beware, however, because this Jack Ryan novel differs from Clancy's previous 'Ryan' tomes in that there is less Ryan in the mix.At times I found it rough going, because the depths of detail in so many diverse academic fields. From historical, nautical, avionics, micro & macroeconomic disciplines to (of course) military and spec ops, you might find yourself asking "What does this have any relationship to do with THAT?"Just keep reading and slogging your way through it all, and you will be rewarded, as Mr. Clancy sure knew how to tie voluminous amounts of information into a tidy bow!

This is one of the best Jack Ryan novels, it starts out what I feel is the heart of the Jack Ryan saga. About every year or so, I start with this book and read straight through - Debt of Honor, Executive Orders, Rainbow Six, Bear and the Dragon, Teeth of the Tiger, Dead or Alive, Locked On, Threat Vector, and now Command Authority. With the sad passing of Tom Clancy, this body of work may be now complete. If you want to experience a master at work - start with Debt of Honor and be ready to read (at least) Executive Orders - which picks up immediately where Debt of Honor leaves off. If you go through the whole progression of these 9 novels you will not be disappointed. The realism of Clancy's work, always rooted in real technologies, agencies and geopolitical dynamics - and his ability to weave together dozens of fully defined characters and sub-plots is a thing of beauty. And if you look for some action in your reads - go no further. He describes real weapons & technology, and how they work mechanically, physically and emotionally on enemies. Tom Clancy will forever be a giant due to this body of work alone. Read Debt of Honor, you will not be disappointed and you will probably jump right into Executive Orders.

Older novel, but a great one, by the real Tom Clancy 1994, it has an eerie relevance to current history. Foreshadowing the events of 9/11, Clancy paints the economic distortions created by asymmetric trade and cultural differences, the oligarchy (Japanese call them zaibatsu) subverting government. Military misadventures follow economic disasters. An intellectual elite resorts to treason. The story could take place today with a slight rearrangement of not so superpowers, China, Russia, Japan and India. This book is a reread for me, fascinating as we struggle today with every bit as complex a political economic dialectic — with oligarchs, intelligentsia and media subverting a not so politically correct president, and the same question of how much sovereignty to forfeit in exchange for international order/ peace.

I keep reading because I've never left a book unfinished but I almost broke my record with this one and the next. It is lenghty and too much details that reading it some years later are absolutelly irrelevant and unnecessary. I don't have any interest on how the submachine guns work or how the transmission of internet happens before. Or the motivations of every character in the book. Also the action line is jumpy, going from a continent to another with just a couple of parragraph to let one find out who is this sections refer to. I barely finished it and plunged into the Executive order because I had already bought it. It is no better. You can add implausibility to the plot and subplots.

The New Jerusalem Bible is a bold translation, and it's best read in the hardcover edition. While everyone expects something different out of a Bible, the combination of translation and features have made this one my favorite. The TranslationThis translation does not stand in the Tyndale tradition and lacks the familiar English Biblish. The editor opines that literary fidelity has been everywhere preferred to literary quality, but the translation is by no means wooden. It reads smoothly, and in some cases sacrifices familiar phrasing for correct interpretation:John 3:16For this is how God loved the world: he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. The most useful aspect of the translation is the treatment of God's names in the Old Testament. I know of no other modern translation that maintains the distinction of God's OT names so assiduously. El and Elohim are (depending on context) rendered God, god, or gods. El Elyon is rendered God Most High. Yahweh and El Shaddai are transliterated. Readers acquainted with the documentary hypothesis, or bronze age religion as it was practiced, will appreciate this distinction. Two examples:Exodus 6:2-3God spoke to Moses and said to him, 'I am Yahweh. To Abraham, Isaac and Jacob I appeared as El Shaddai, but I did not make my name Yahweh known to them.'Deuteronomy 32:8-9When the Most High gave the nations each their heritage, when he partitioned out the human race, he assigned the boundaries of nations according to the number of the children of God, but Yahweh's portion was his people, Jacob was to be the measure of his inheritance. (Following the Septuagint.)The textual basis of the Old Testament is the Masoretic Text, but as you can see from the Deuteronomy excerpt, the translators availed themselves of other sources which they felt represented a more ancient tradition, or solved problems with the Hebrew text. Editorial emendations have also been made. The deuterocanon (presented in the Roman Catholic order) and New Testament are taken from modern critical texts, with reference to other versions. Footnotes identify anything in the text taken from the versions or created by editorial emendation. Longer questionable passages, such as the ending of Mark and the pericope of the adulteress, are kept in the text, but footnotes discuss the problems with these sections. Shorter spurious passages, like the Johannine comma, are removed to the footnotes. The FeaturesThe text is presented in a single-column, paragraphed format. Poetry is formatted as such. Major divisions within books are given numbered headings (Roman numerals, naturally), and subsections or pericopes have bold headings. Chapter numbers are large and bold in the text, while verse numbers are to be found in the inner margin. If two or more verses begin on the same line, a dot or bullet point is used to separate them. While this is a rather unusual layout, it is very easy to find things in this Bible, by chapter and verse or subject. It combines the best aspects of the traditional chapter and verse bible with the best aspect of the numberless “reader's Bibles” that have recently been (re-)introduced.All footnotes are found at the bottom of the right-hand page. Footnotes comprise mainly translation information, textual variants, and historical notes. These notes usually take a historical-critical approach, and do not assume we possess a completely inerrant text. Doctrinal notes are rare, but there are some. A notable example can be found in Luke 22:32k, which reads in part, “This saying gives Peter a function in directing faith with regard to the other apostles. His primacy within the apostolic college is affirmed more clearly than in Mt 16:17-19, where he could simply be the spokesman and representative of the Twelve.” The text, of course, says nothing of the sort. It only says Peter will “strengthen” his brothers. There are various other features along the margin of the page. At the top of the left-hand page, a page number, the name of the book, and the chapter and verse of the first verse on the page. The top of the right-hand page has the same information, but the chapter and verse are those of the last one on the page. The outer margin has references to parallels, quotations, and allusions. (Quotations in the text are helpfully italicized.) While all this could make the page seem very busy, it is very easy to ignore the marginalia and concentrate on the text due to the single-column format described earlier.Several groupings of books, and several individual books, have introductions of at least several pages each. Like the notes, these are full of historical information. There are fairly detailed discussions of the documentary hypothesis and the synoptic problem, the authenticity and dating of the epistles, etc. The introductions are fairly meaty, as these things go. They compare favorably to other study Bibles. There is also some interesting back matter in this volume. The chronological table presents two or three chronologies in parallel, displaying various events from Biblical and secular history. It runs for about 20 pages. There is a family tree of the Hasmonean and Herodian dynasties. There is a page devoted to the calendar, and two pages devoted to measures and money. There are indexes to footnote subjects, to persons, and to the maps—of which there are seven, in full (if tastefully muted) color, one spread over two pages. The Physical ConstructionRemoving the somewhat ostentatious dust cover, one is presented with a slightly-less ostentatious blue hardcover, with a big gold foil JB on the front and more restrained markings on the spine. The paper is thin and there is bleed-through. Text lines are not matched with those on the opposite side of the page. The maps are on thick, glossy paper. It lays flat for reading.

I bought the New Jerusalem Bible after reading the reviews. One thing I was unsure of was buying a Bible that was "gender inclusive."To date, I haven't found that to be an issue for me. I rarely see it in the text.I have had the original Jerusalem Bible(1966) for quite a few years and I really like that version. In comparing the two, the new version is not as thick and the text looks to be the same size. This is a revised Jerusalem Bible and in comparing various passages of Scripture this Bible fares well.A few examples that I look at:+ I Samuel 6:19 renders the number of those struck as 70. Some Bibles have 50,000 or 50,070.+ Revelation 22:19 has "tree of life" where some have "book of life."+ Matthew 6:13 has "and do not put us to the test" rather than "lead us not into temptation."+ I Timothy 5:17 has "double reward" rather than "double pay."+ I John 5:7 doesn't include the "Erasmus Addition."- Another verse that has different renderings is Mark 10:25. Some use "large rope" where this version uses the common "camel."Those are some of my personal observations of verses that are commonly translated differently. In the Preface the editor states that when a choice had to made, "fidelity to the text" was preferred over "literary quality."For modern English versions of Scripture this one reads as well as any of the others that I have used.I personally prefer a good "study" Bible. This book fits that bill superbly!Like the original, this newer version is loaded with footnotes that are keyed to the chapter. That is especially helpful when there is a difference between source texts. I like to know the differences whether they are used or not.The paragraphs have captions which is also helpful. Particularly for navigating. There are Scriptural cross-references in the outer margins. There are lengthy, educational Introductions at the beginning of each section."Yahweh" is used in the Old Testament.I Like The New Jerusalem Bible a lot. Slightly better than the original. There does not appear to be any doctrinal bias. This has become my daily reader and a favorite.

Because of its extensive footnotes and cross references this annotated Bible shows the meanings behind the words. No translation can really convey the full meaning, and this is compounded by the fact that the books of the bible were written 2,000 or more years ago. However, with its scholarly annotations this one goes a very long way to overcome these problems. Highly recommended.

Readable with many USEFUL footnotes. Larger print a great help to enjoyment. Introductions for sections very useful and also informative. Those and footnotes are necessary for understanding these very old writings for a much different time than today. Much can only really be understood with knowledge of the context and time in which they were written

The only attractive thing about this Bible is the cover. It is so small that the text font point is smaller than the notes/commentary in a legible Study Bible. The Bible/book is very much too thick in dimension to be practically usable, to compensate for the lack of exterior length and width. I would like to have had this in a much larger size so I could use it. I cannot comment on the scholarship of the notes/commentary since it is too small to read. This is possibly the biggest disappointment of any/all the paper print products I have invested in. I would like to have this in digital format to enable me to choose font size. But I have not found that availability at LOGOS, Kindle (amazon), or i Books.I greatly discourage the purchase of this particular item in this size, unless you want to go slowly, using a magnifying glass.

You can't go wrong owning a complete, current set of Scott Stamp Catalog. Although, I'm not an investor or dealer, I try to purchase a used set every decade or so, just to keep current on supply and demand for particularly countries and issues, as well as aid in identifying stamps, their rarity, and value, etc. Also handy is to know whether or not you have a complete set of a particular issue or not. Also, note that buy purchasing a used set a few years old, you can save 80-90% on the cost of purchasing the very latest edition/volumes.Serious investors should consult the newest edition before buying and selling premium postage stamps. I generally review older editions and compare with the current one to see general trends in a particular countries value. For instance, Chinese stamps have, in general, quintupled in value since the early 1980s when compared to today's Scott Catalog values. Basically, Scott values are base on the most recent estimates of stock available and, in the case of high value stamps, the estimated current auction house values dependent on grade, rarity, etc. Also handy is the notes on forgeries to watch out for, certificate of authenticity requirements, etc, etc.

It may not be the current edition but it is good enough at the price.

Lots of information!

just great

I have received my purchase as I expected
