Lise falls in love with broken people and thinks herself unworthy of love. Brought up by an unemotional Aunt, who does her duty, Lise escapes to Paris by volunteering for the war. She gets caught up in a life of prostitution and crime. Somehow, she finds redemption.Godden managed to write of nuns and intensely religious/spiritual subjects in a mystical but also matter of fact way. In this novel, and Brede, her main themes are all persons are worthy of love and forgiveness. She is religious and devout with out being preachy/churchy. She ranks as one of my favorite authors that write about faith. Gail Godwin and Susan Howatch are others.

Not everyone will enjoy the style of Rumer Godden. Her stories are like water flowing: sometimes slow, sometimes meandering gently but inexorably along, and sometimes a sudden rush of change or current. This account of a prostitute turned madam turned prisoner turned nun is a book to savor and ponder. Why only three stars? The pace is a bit too uneven and the main character a little too difficult to understand. Perhaps I was spoiled by In This House of Brede, which I love. And I hate the ending and being left hanging about the fate of one of the main characters. I found that a bit of a shock.

Rumer Godden wrote this volume when the roman rite of the Catholic church was experiencing the upheaval of renewal, maybe especially regarding consecrated life. She had already written two distinguished novels (Black Narcissus/ In this House of Brede) related to the experience of women seeking the contemplative life within community. Rather than producing pious works of art, she focused on whole person commitment to a way of life which remains mysterious, even in our own post-modern times. This novel is entwined with historical events in France which called for attention to the miserable lives of prisoners, and inter-active works of mercy among those suffering. Possibly, most surprising is the fact that Dominican friar, Jean-Joseph Latasse founded a religious community of women, many of whom were former prisoners, or women living less than virtuous lives in order to remain alive in conditions of deadly poverty. These are the Dominican Sisters of Bethany. This novel takes that bit of on-going history (the community continues to exist), and engages the modern reader with contemporary responses to that charism. It is certainly not a story known to most Catholics, or even women seeking further conversion and consecration after release from the fetters of unfocused living. (Women attached to this movement in the USA have formed a group of Dominican Lay Friars living in incarceration, a total success story in an eastern-state prison, and a testimonial to living mercy among all people.) This book should not be missed by contemporary readers who are learning more about the Roman church under the guidance of Pope Francis, or the loving generosity of the Gospels.According to some biblical scholars, the shepherds of the Christmas story were local prisoners set outside the community because of their ethical violations. In line with their insights, the shepherds were felons, hence the scandal of the story, often missed on Christmas cards. Good News is for everyone. The God who is primarily a wild and passionate lover could say to the thief on the cross next to his own, "This day you will be with me in Paradise." Ah, ha: "Repent and believe in the Good News." Dismas, the repentant thief, was the only person Jesus of Nazareth claimed would be in the paradise first offered in the Garden of Eden. This is a book of hope.THOMAS PATRICK HULL,Chicago

Rumer Godden is a writer extraordinaire! This was one of those books that have you wondering throughout where the plot is leading. Not until the last chapter is everything made clear. From the streets and brothels to the convent is a great journey in itself. But the connections made during that journey make for a bombshell ending that left me sitting for a time reliving the book and marveling at the mastery of the writing. I gave it only four stars, only because for me, she'll never do anything as great as "In This House of Brede". In addition, this isn't everyone's taste. If you are looking for a wild mystery, you won't find it here. But if you want the introspection of a quiet background mystery that knocks you off your chair, be sure to read this. She's a master writer and one of my favorites.

I have read this book now 5 times! Rumor Godden inspires me to be a better person and aspires me to serve my Lord in simple trusting ways. The story never changes, but my life does and every time I need a good dose of God's forgiveness and how simple it is to get back to him - I read this book!! I encourage anyone who wants to hear God's call to read this book. Religions aren't perfect, but the God that calls us is and we're blessed to have Rumor Godden's stories to welcome us to a relationship with him.(I should have read it more than 5 times, but I keep giving it away and didn't have an amazon account to find one so readily in the past.)

I love Rumer Godden's writing and this book does not disappoint. She has a significant grasp on cloistered life and the reality of human interactions. The characters are well constructed and very personable - even though their life circumstances may seem so foreign to many of us.I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a story with significant depth.

Brilliant tale of a girl trapped in the sex trade in France, captured by her love for a clever but evil man, Patrice. Full of the beauty of farm and countryside yet primary action is set in the city, this novel sways from one paradox to another. And the last irony. When Lise finally is free? What does she choose but a celibate life of poverty. As a novel the author ably confronts some of life's great mysterIes-- How can an evil man do good, can a life apart build-up appreciation for life in the midst. Plus? The complexPsychology of sex, friendship
