I read Amish Romance so I truly enjoy being whisked into this different world. It's a breather, a freshness and something I have begun to treasure and after about 35 books I have become quite the expert on what works and doesn't. First of all why is this book so pricey.. I was able to try the first book free and of course being first in a series the other two will be at a cost. That's fine and I'm used to how the series work the problem is this book is not interesting enough because Lizzie is a whiny, brat. I skipped through because she annoyed me with her constant complaining and prattling on about everything. I'm giving it three stars because I like the Emma Character.. I won't be buying the other two because I read the reviews and saw what will happen. Another thing that part with the chickens was beyond repetitive. We get it author, move on. I also thought Lizzie showed complete selfishness when it cane to staying with the Mennonite family, even if it was her birthday. I mean it snowed 2 ft. Where is her compassion and any care for others.. And splashing in slush puddles and getting her friends wet in freezing cold temps is really inconsiderate. If you want to read a good book series try any of Beverly Lewis .. This is clearly for juveniles who like to read about selfish juveniles.. I do not.
I found this book to be slow, jumped back and forth, didn't necessarily always make sense. It seemed that Lizzie has little knowledge of God even though she was 15 and then 16 yrs and lived in an Amish family - it was very very different from other Amish fiction I've read. I began to dislike Lizzie at times, because all she did was whine that her Mother liked Emma better than her. She didn't seem to get it, that her open defiance created most of her own problem. She was lazy and suffered from gluttony, whines and griped insistently, didn't want to follow any rules and thought the entire family should be catering to her!! I finished the book because I'm stubborn that way, and I kept hoping the dialog would improve! I've definitely read better written books
There is just something about most of these Amish novels that keeps drawing me back to the next one and the next one, etc. They always have a "clean" story. This book for example. The young people in this story just amaze me. Do any of our youth have dates playing ping pong, or going to a "sing" with other teens. I loved Emma who just wanted to wear more stylish shoes. I would be totally pleased if my teens read these books as it surely would be enlightening how "times...years... have changed". Maybe we all need to take a step back in life. Anyway, a great read, new subjects, etc.. Very interesting.
There us A LOT of Amish Romance novels out there but those I have found are not written by the Amish till I found Linda Byler's books. Why is that important? Because a lot of them don't get the Amish way of life or their way of thinking right. Oh, they do a good job in general, but there is always something off. they get the way the Amish think about God, the Church, and the individual's place within society off.I liked this novel. It was a solid plot, based on the real life of the author, with colorful characters, real emotions, and include, like all good Amish books, RECIPES.
I really looked forward to "Running Around and Such" but it was a HUGE disappointment. This book is written for teenagers ages 12-16 not for adults. The writing is very simplified and the book doesn't go into any depth at all. Mam whines to Dat that she doesn't want to move so he can farm, and Lizzie is a spoiled brat who doesn't want to learn to be an Amish wife. This book should be flagged for young adults when the stats for the book are given. Definitely not a good one and I'm not looking forward to the next book in the series.
A good story that follows Lizzie as she enters those teen years and all the confusing emotions one can have. Unfortunately, Lizzie seems to be having a harder time controlling these than her older sister does. Amish or English....these are things most teenagers have to deal with and yet still get along with the rest of the family. A bit slower read for me, yet I enjoyed it and am heading to the second book in the series.
Having read both positive & negative review I decided that it may be a good read...and it was! It made one realize that we have Amish people on a pedestal but they are human just like the English and they have the same desires and sometimes make the same mistakes. I was glad that the author got the intimate points across without going into too much detail. I do not want to give away the plot but I will say....keep your tissues handy, especially if you have ever miscarried or aborted a child.
This book is a great novel about an Amish girl growing up. I'm on the 3rd and final book of the series. Highly recommended. If you are interested in the lifestyle of the Amish I highly recommend this series. Great Christian reading. I also like the recipes at the end of each book. Will be trying some of them. Looking forward to ordering more books in the future.
