I have been a dedicated student and practitioner of Buddhism and meditation for many years. I have also read much about the Christian, contemplative mystics. This amazing book fuses these two areas of focus and paints a portrait of a beautiful world where the unity of the transcendent merges with the daily life of multiplicity in which we all live.I had not been at all aware of Evelyn Underhill prior to reading this book but it's profound effect on my view of life, death, why we are here and how we can live joyful, meaningful lives, compels me to read everything she has written. The most amazing aspect of reading this book is that it was written almost 100 years ago but speaks to the reader in language and images that are as contemporary as any of the more "lightweight" tomes on meditation that flood the market. This book is the "real deal" and it's message is priceless.
As descending darkness in our social-political world tempted me to set aside contemplation as irrelevant, I stumbled across this little book on practical mysticism. As Europe plunged into WWI, Underwood offered this guide to contemplative prayer as a way to face reality and thus engage in the world with deeply rooted hope. Poetic, learned, and wise this book is just what I need a century after its publication. I feel led to this book, and this book will lead to more works by Evelyn Underhill along with more engagement in the world.
I found that this book touched my heart in unexpected ways - having read a number of the less favorable reviews, I can concur that the author seems to ramble and that sentences often do not make (conventional) sense. One reader mentioned that trying to describe mysticism may be impossible due to the nature of the subject. I would agree, but if you are seeking the way of closer union with God, Underhill captures some of the frustrations and excitements of that journey. Don't give up - try reading it again another time, when some of her observations may make more sense!

There is simply no other book that I know of that is more clearly written, thoughtfully presented, and graspable in every way about the nature and practice of mindfulness than Evelyn Underhill's Practical Mysticism. Get it!
A good explanation of how to know the divine. The book goes into great detail. It's not a book that merely states you must have "faith".
A classic.
