I read this book as a curious, church-hopping Protestant. It blew my mind.Metropolitan Kallistos Ware was born in the UK as Timothy Ware, before joining the Orthodox Church in 1958. This book was originally published in 1966. I would describe as an introduction to how the Orthodox view the world. Less about dogma ("We believe X and reject Y because"), and more about general approaches to God and theology. As such, I think it can be appreciated by a Christian of any background.I've been attending the Orthodox Church for 1.5 years, and I constantly go back to this book - either for a full re-read, or to reference sections here and there.

I've made multiple attempts to write a review that will do this book justice, and fell short. Suffice it to say, it is a "must read" for any Christian who want to understand (as much as we are able) the Trinitarian nature of God - an understanding that took seven ecumenical councils to clarify. I dare say that one cannot mature very far along the Christian path without the insights provided in this book - whether you receive them through this book or by other means. For the first time, I feel I have a much better appreciation as to why "man" is the pinnacle of God's creation, and why we are so important to Him. Indeed, what is revealed, or taught, in this book is essential to understanding the plan of Salvation and the Christian journey to spiritual maturity. If I have one doubt about the material presented, it is with regard to "apophatic" or "hesychastic" method, and its use in conjunction with the "Jesus Prayer". Having experienced Buddhism, in my long journey to Eastern Orthodoxy, this sounds a lot like some of the meditation practices I was taught as a Zen practitioner. Had this form of prayer been a practice since apostolic times, I would be less concerned , but it appears to have arisen amongst 13th century monastics. Late developments in practice should be viewed with an eye of suspicion. In spite of that one reservation, this book reaffirms for me my decision to convert to Eastern Orthodoxy. So much so that it is hard to view my former Christian affiliations as anything remotely resembling the Way that Christ taught.

Read this in one sitting. The book, more or less, presents the Orthodox views of God. Ware defends the trinity, clarifies God's nature, and loads of other things that are theologically significant. In fact, I would reclassify this book as being "basic Christian theology," since I can't imagine any trinitarian Christian rejecting any of the content here (except Catholics with the filioque). It's a very spiritual book and certainly eye-opening. I recommend it after having read The Orthodox Church: New Edition

A special book. There are not many books out there that are so encompassing in such a short work. Bishop Kallistos Ware gives the reader an enlightening view of how Orthodox doctrine, interpretation, and tradition guides the experiences and views of Christianity. It's not a dogmatic book, although it includes theology as needed. It's not an ecclesiological book, either. It's rather a combination of many aspects of the Orthodox church in order to give an idea of the daily *experience* of a devout Orthodox Christian, rather than an idea of the daily doings, habits, or rituals. It's a deep look. Awesome read for the Orthodox and the non-Orthodox who want to understand the Orthodox. It will also become a great reference after the initial read.My favorite chapters were the ones on the Trinity, mystery, and prayer.

Tells me things that I didn't know about Christian tenets in general, and reaffirms things that I only consciously knew. Helps me understood why I am specifically an Orthodox, and not another variation of Christian. Chapters are divided on God in different roles and who he is. Is actually a bit of a hard book to put down, though it's recommended that you read this in a quiet place so you fully understand this.

I am considering joining the Orthodox Church and was really impressed by the content and author of this book (The theological, logical, emotional, and spiritual content was very well researched and graciousness communicated). This book is a strong introduction to the Orthodox faith, though theology in general may be a new frontier for many modern readers. The church has a rich history and a spiritual orientation that appears to point its members towards humility, compassion, action, and spiritual growth. The only item that the modern reader might need to watch out for was the author’s polite and brief dismissiveness of the “Mother Goddess” archetype with a few similar but fairly minor gender “quips”. However, the author seems more fluid in thought than not despite his somewhat rigid “father-focus”, especially based on the year this book was published. Also, you could say that most time-tested faiths and denominations struggle with patriarchal bias to this very day as a condition of simply having been around for so long. No church on earth is perfect. All in all, a great read that is true to its purpose.

This book explained the philosophy and principle of Orthodoxy very clearly. I found it most useful. Although I am an atheist, Orthodoxy is part of my cultural background and tradition. It was enlightening to read a clearly written book about it that explains the logic as well as the passions behind the Orthodox faith. This has given me a newly found respect for the theology of Orthodox (and, by extension, Catholic) Christianity, even though I do not actually believe in the tenets. For someone who has faith, this book would lay out the principles in a logical and also psychologically meaningful way.

Great book on Orthodoxy. If you are trying to learn about Orthodoxy as an Orthodox Christian or if you are trying to understand the religion of a friend or if you are thinking of becoming Orthodox, it is a very informative book.
